The Reckoning

By late afternoon, the steps of City Hall were swarming with news vans, cameras, and reporters broadcasting the breaking story across the nation. The State Attorney General formally announced a comprehensive fraud and public endangerment indictment against Richard Vance and six senior executives of Vance Logistics.
The Harbor View project was immediately condemned, its construction halted indefinitely pending a full structural teardown and environmental remediation.
Helena stood on the top step of City Hall, watching the police escort Richard to an awaiting cruiser. He walked with his head down, the cameras flashing mercilessly in his face. There was no triumph in the sight—only the tragic reality of how arrogance and unchecked greed inevitably destroy the very people who worship them.
Arthur Vance approached Helena as the crowd dispersed. The old man looked smaller now, stripped of the imperial aura that had surrounded him for decades.
"Helena," Arthur said quietly. "I cannot undo what was done. I cannot take back the fear my grandson brought to your home, or the pain he caused your little girl."
"No, you can't," Helena replied gently. "Money and apologies cannot rebuild a foundation that was designed to fail from the start."
"I know," Arthur said. "The Vance Foundation will be dissolved. Its assets will be placed into a public trust dedicated entirely to constructing proper, safe housing for the families of this city. We would like you to serve as the lead trustee and chief architect."

Helena looked at the old man, seeing the genuine remorse in his tired eyes. "I will oversee the construction, Mr. Vance. But not for your family's redemption. For the people who deserve a safe place to live."
Arthur bowed his head respectfully. "That is all I could ever ask."
