The Marble Veil / Chapter 12 / 15

The Breaking Point

Richard slammed his hands down on the podium, abandoning every shred of his polished veneer. "This is a setup! Those files are unverified! She stole proprietary company data!"

"Are the numbers wrong, Richard?" Councilwoman Alvarez demanded, her voice ringing with outrage. "Look at the telemetry logs. Those are municipal sensor signatures. You can't fake a municipal water-table frequency."

"I did what had to be done to finish the project!" Richard shouted, his eyes wild as he looked around the room, realizing that the web of influence he had relied upon had suddenly evaporated under the glare of undeniable data. "The city needed those housing numbers! The banks were going to foreclose! My father worked twenty years to build this company, and I won't let some self-righteous draftsman tear it down!"

The silence that followed was suffocating.

From the back of the chamber, the sound of slow, rhythmic footsteps echoed on the marble floor.

Arthur Vance walked into the room, leaning heavily on his walking stick. He was accompanied not by his usual security detail, but by two investigators from the State Attorney General’s Office.

"Grandfather..." Richard whispered, stepping back from the podium as if burned.

Arthur stopped at the center aisle, looking at the horrifying red fracture lines projected on the wall, then turned his gaze upon his grandson. His face was a mask of profound sorrow and ancient dignity.

"You told me the foundation was sound, Richard," the old man said, his voice quiet yet carrying the weight of a final judgment. "You told me Helena left because she couldn't handle the scale of the work."

"I was trying to protect the family name!" Richard cried, desperate now, pleading.

"You don't protect a name by burying innocent people under it," Arthur said softly. He turned to the state investigators. "Gentlemen. The servers at our corporate headquarters are open to your team. You have full access to every email, every ledger, and every account under the Vance name."
