Chapter 8

The impact of the fall sent a sharp jolt through Clara’s knees, but she didn't hesitate. She scrambled across the flowerbed, scooping Toby up from the mulch into her arms. The baby was crying softly now, too exhausted to scream, his tiny body burning like a furnace against her chest. Clara glanced back at the frosted pantry window. Through the glass, she could see Connor’s shadow smashing through the splintered wood, his arm reaching blindly into the empty dark space.
Clara turned and broke into a run, sprinting across the manicured green lawn toward the dense line of suburban timber at the edge of the Vance estate. Her lavender tulle dress was torn, her hair had completely unraveled from its messy bun, streaming wildly behind her in the morning wind, and her bare feet—having lost her flats back in the kitchen—skimmed painfully over the cold grass and sharp twigs.
Behind her, the back door of the kitchen burst open. Connor stumbled out onto the patio, his dark button-down shirt wrinkled, his eyes wild with furious disbelief as he spotted his wife fleeing across the lawn.
"Clara! Get back here right now! You insane bitch!" Connor roared, his voice echoing off the neighboring houses.
Eleanor appeared behind him on the patio, clutching her pearls in absolute horror, her maroon silk blouse rustling as she pointed frantically toward the fleeing figures. "Don't just stand there, Connor! Catch her! If the neighbors see this, our reputation is ruined! Bring her back inside immediately!"
Connor didn't need the encouragement. He launched into a sprint across the grass, his khakis rustling as he closed the distance between them with terrifying speed. Clara’s lungs burned, the lack of sleep, the stress, and the physical exhaustion pulling at her limbs like lead weights. She was running on pure adrenaline and maternal terror.
She reached the tree line just as Connor’s footsteps pounded heavily on the grass behind her. Dodging behind a thick trunk of a weeping willow, Clara ducked into the dense underbrush of the local nature reserve that bordered the back of the neighborhood. The thick canopy of oak and pine trees plunged her into sudden, protective shadow.

Connor burst into the tree line a second later, stopping abruptly and spinning in circles, chest heaving. "Clara! You can't hide out here! You have no money, no phone, no car! You'll come crawling back in an hour!" he yelled into the dense woods, his voice echoing emptily through the branches.
Clara held her breath, pressing herself flat against the rough bark of a pine tree deep within the brush. Toby buried his face in her neck, miraculously silent. She listened to Connor’s heavy footsteps pacing near the edge of the woods for several agonizing minutes before they finally retreated toward the house. She had escaped the marble cage, but she was barefoot, penniless, and holding a critically ill baby in the middle of an unfamiliar forest.
