Chapter 7

The small frosted glass window at the back of the walk-in pantry offered a microscopic sliver of hope in a pitch-black world. Clara stood on tiptoe, shifting Toby securely onto her hip, and pressed her palm against the cool glass. It was a hopper window, hinged at the bottom, secured by a simple metal latch at the top. Outside, the morning sunlight filtered through the leaves of a towering oak tree, casting dancing shadows across the cramped pantry shelves.

From the other side of the oak door, Connor’s shoulder slammed against the wood with a heavy, dull thud. The entire pantry frame shuddered, and a box of baking flour toppled off the top shelf, bursting open on the floor in a cloud of white dust.

"Clara! This is your final warning!" Connor roared, his voice thick with unbridled rage. "Unlock this door before I kick it off its hinges! You are embarrassing yourself and making a fool of me!"

Eleanor’s voice chimed in like a chilling chorus, dripping with venom. "Show her there are consequences for disobedience, Connor. She has tested our patience for the last time. Finish it!"

Clara didn't answer. She knew that if Connor broke through that door, she and Toby would be completely trapped with no further recourse. The physical abuse would escalate behind closed doors, and her son’s medical needs would continue to be ignored. Gathering every ounce of strength she had left, Clara ignored the throbbing pain in her bruised arm, reached up with her free hand, and flicked the metal latch upward.

The latch gave way with a sharp metallic click. Clara pushed the frosted glass outward. Cool morning air rushed into the enclosed space, carrying the scent of damp grass and blooming roses. It was a tight squeeze—the opening was barely wide enough for an adult's torso, framed by sharp decorative iron bars on the outside.

Toby whimpered, coughing weakly as the fresh air hit his flushed face. "Shh, my sweet boy, mommy’s got you," Clara whispered fiercely, pressing a kiss to his damp curls.

Without hesitation, Clara hoisted herself up onto the lower pantry shelf, ignoring the way her lavender tulle dress snagged and tore on a protruding metal bracket. She thrust Toby through the open window first, cradling him gently as she pushed him past the iron bars into the safety of the exterior shrubbery below. The drop was only about four feet, landing on a soft bed of mulch beneath the kitchen window.

"Clara! What are you doing?!" Connor’s voice shouted from right outside the pantry door as the wood began to splinter under a ferocious kick.

With a final burst of adrenaline, Clara squeezed her own shoulders through the narrow window frame, scraping her skin against the rough stucco exterior as she dropped heavily down into the mulch beside her son.
