Chapter 3: The Hidden Ledger

The house was completely silent by three in the morning, save for the wind rattling the leaded glass windows of the foyer. Ethan moved through the shadows with deliberate caution, avoiding the third step from the top of the grand staircase because he knew it creaked. His destination was Claire’s private writing desk in the corner of the master bedroom—a space he rarely intruded upon out of respect for her privacy.

The moon broke through the heavy storm clouds, casting a pale rectangular beam across the mahogany surface. The brass drawer pulls were cold to the touch. Ethan slid the top drawer open, his fingers brushing past fountain pens, stationery, and unopened wedding invitations. Nothing out of the ordinary. But beneath a false bottom crafted from matching wood veneer, he found a slim, black leather-bound ledger.

The pages inside were filled with Claire’s meticulous handwriting. Entries dated back eighteen months, detailing massive wire transfers from corporate accounts controlled by Eleanor’s holding company, directed straight to an offshore entity bearing Julian’s initials. There were notes scrawled in the margins, written with an increasingly frantic hand as the months progressed. He is draining the trust. If Mother finds out, the foundation will collapse. I have to stop him.

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs. The narrative of a tragic domestic accident began to dissolve, replaced by something much darker and more calculating. Claire hadn't simply slipped on the marble stairs. She had discovered financial treason within her own family, and she had threatened to expose it.

A floorboard creaked in the hallway just outside the bedroom door. The sound was muffled by the thick Persian runner, but Ethan’s instincts flared. He slipped the ledger into the inside pocket of his suit jacket just as the brass doorknob began to turn with agonizing slowness.

Julian slipped into the room, silhouetted against the dim corridor light. He was still fully dressed in his blue trousers and a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He froze when he saw Ethan standing by the desk, his eyes darting to the open drawer.

"Looking for a keepsake?" Julian asked, his voice low and devoid of its usual youthful cadence. It carried an edge of cold menace that chilled Ethan to the bone.

"I was looking for answers, Julian," Ethan replied steadily, taking a step away from the desk. "And it looks like I just found them in black and white."
