Chapter 1: The Shattered Glass

The crystal chandelier above the grand foyer cast a cold, fractured light across the polished marble floor. Ethan stood frozen, his fingers still bunched tightly in the lapels of Julian’s blue suit. The raw fabric of the jacket bit into his palms, a tactile anchor in a world that had suddenly dissolved into noise and shadow. Just moments before, the heavy oak front doors had been barricaded against the relentless evening storm, locking them inside this mausoleum of wealth and silence. Claire lay motionless in the white-lined wooden coffin, her signature red hair fanned out across the quilted silk pillow like spilled autumn leaves. Her skin possessed the translucent, alarming stillness of porcelain.

Julian did not flinch from Ethan’s grip. The younger man’s eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with a defensive panic that he tried desperately to mask beneath a facade of modern detachment. Behind them, Eleanor stood rigid near the sweeping staircase, her black dress whispering against the bottom step as she shifted her weight. Her pearl earrings caught the chandelier's glare, gleaming like tiny, unblinking eyes judging every breath drawn in the room.

"Let go of him, Ethan," Eleanor commanded, her voice cutting through the thick, suffocating air with the authority of a matriarch who had buried empires and husbands alike. "Bruising his collar won’t bring her back, and it certainly won’t answer the questions spinning in your head."

Ethan’s breathing was ragged, his chest heaving against the constriction of his black suit. The scent of heavy white lilies crowded his lungs, making it difficult to draw a clean breath. He slowly loosened his grip, letting his hands drop to his sides as if the fabric had suddenly turned to hot coals. He stared at Julian, noting the faint, crescent-shaped scratch just below the younger man’s right ear—a mark that hadn't been there when Ethan left for the London conference three days ago.

"You haven't answered me, Julian," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with a dangerous, controlled fury. "How did she get a bruise like that on her collarbone? I saw it when I kissed her hands. That didn't come from a fall down the stairs. That came from a struggle."

Julian smoothed down his jacket lapels, his fingers trembling ever so slightly despite his best efforts. "People panic when they fall, Ethan. You’re seeing things that aren't there because you feel guilty about being across the ocean when she needed you."

Eleanor stepped forward, placing a heavy, jeweled hand on Julian’s shoulder, a clear gesture of protection. "The medical examiner’s report will be here in the morning. Until then, we mourn with dignity in this house."
