Chapter 11: The London Alibi

The foyer grew deathly quiet. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the distance sounded like a drumbeat of impending doom. Ethan stood frozen, the color draining completely from his face as all eyes in the room turned toward him.
"That’s insane," Ethan said, his voice rising in sudden, defensive panic. "I was in London for the Global Energy summit. My hotel room card logs, my flight tickets, my calendar—it’s all documented."
"A hotel room card can be swiped by a proxy, Mr. Vance," Vance said quietly, pulling a small flash drive from his pocket and holding it up to the light. "We searched Pendelton’s vehicle when the highway patrol stopped him. Inside his briefcase was a cloned routing server configured to mimic your corporate IP address in London. Every single transaction executing the endowment theft was routed through your personal terminal credentials."
Julian stared at Ethan, his expression shifting from suspicion to absolute horror. "You... you were the one stealing from the foundation? You used my reckless spending as cover so everyone would blame me if the books were ever audited?"
"I didn't touch the foundation funds!" Ethan shouted, stepping back as the two troopers moved in to flank him. "This is a setup! Look at the dates—I was out of the country when those transfers started!"
"Precisely," Eleanor said softly, turning away from Claire’s coffin to face him. Her eyes were hard, devoid of any warmth or maternal affection. "You engineered your alibi months in advance, making sure you were thousands of miles away whenever a major transaction cleared. You thought Claire wouldn't notice because she trusted you implicitly as her husband."
"Claire did notice," Pendelton sneered from between the troopers. "She found the routing files on your home office computer three days ago. She confronted you on the phone while you were pretending to be in a London boardroom. That’s why you flew back on the red-eye flight—not because you were grieving, but because you needed to destroy the hard copy before Vance got his hands on it."

Ethan shook his head, his chest heaving as the weight of the elaborate trap closed around him. "She confronted me... yes. But I didn't touch her. I was in the air when she died!"
"You were on a private charter flight that landed an hour before our radar logs recorded your commercial arrival," Vance stated flatly, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Ethan’s wrists. The cold metal clicked shut with a finality that echoed through the grand foyer. "Mr. Vance, you are under arrest for the murder of Claire Vance and the systematic embezzlement of four million dollars in charitable trust funds."
