Chapter 9 - The Face in the Cell

The harsh fluorescent light of the police precinct holding cell glared off the smooth, bald head of the man staring straight into Arthur’s phone screen. It was Detective Marcus Vance, looking disheveled, his uniform shirt unbuttoned at the collar and sweat beading on his forehead.

"Arthur," Marcus croaked, his voice strained and panicked through the tiny speaker of the burner phone. "Arthur, you need to listen to me right now. They picked me up twenty minutes ago. They have the audit logs from five years ago."

Arthur froze, his thumb hovering over the screen, his breath catching in his throat. Beside him, Clara stopped with her hand on the car door, her eyes shifting from Arthur’s pale face to the glowing display.

"What are you talking about, Marcus?" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to keep steady.

"Cross didn't just want your house, Arthur," Marcus hissed, leaning closer to the camera lens in the cell, his eyes wide with genuine terror. "He wants the whole firm's foundation ripped apart. He’s cutting a deal with the federal prosecutor right now. Trading my badge and your freedom for immunity."

"Immunity for what?" Clara demanded, stepping closer and leaning over Arthur’s shoulder to stare at the phone screen. Her voice was cold, sharp as shattered glass. "Marcus, what did my husband do?"

Marcus blinked, finally noticing Clara in the frame. A grim, bitter smile touched the corners of his mouth. "Ah. So she didn't know about the shell companies, or the offshore accounts, or the fact that the fire in the data center wasn't an accident, Clara. Your husband orchestrated the whole thing to collect the insurance payout."

Arthur felt the blood drain entirely from his face. "Marcus, shut your mouth!" he screamed, lunging toward the phone as if he could physically strangle the image on the screen. "You son of a bitch, you were part of it!"

"Yeah, I was," Marcus replied, his voice dropping into a defiant, exhausted sneer. "And I'm not going down alone while you play suburban dad in your nice dark suit and tie. Cross is coming for you, Arthur. And he’s bringing the federal marshals with him by morning."

The video feed abruptly cut to black, leaving only Arthur’s own terrified reflection staring back at him from the dark glass of the phone screen.

Clara slowly stepped back from him, her hands raised as if to ward off a physical blow. The betrayal in her eyes was absolute, heavy and suffocating. She looked at the car where Leo and Maya were watching them through the rear window with wide, uncomprehending eyes.

"You burned a building down," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the car engine. "You killed a man—or let him burn—and you lied to me every single day for five years."

"Clara, please," Arthur pleaded, reaching out with empty, trembling hands. "It was corporate espionage gone wrong. I didn't want anyone to die. Julian was supposed to be out of the building!"

"Don't say his name," Clara hissed, her voice suddenly rising with a fierce, terrifying intensity that made Arthur step back. She pulled the car door open, climbed into the driver's seat, and slammed it shut before Arthur could reach the handle.

"Clara, wait! Let me drive!" Arthur yelled, banging his fist against the driver's side window.

She ignored him entirely, shifting the gear into reverse with a violent jerk. The tires squealed against the pavement as the sedan backed out of the driveway, narrowly missing the brick mailbox.

"Mom!" Leo cried out from the back seat as the car lurched backward into the street.

Arthur chased the vehicle down the driveway, shouting her name, but Clara pressed down hard on the accelerator, leaving him standing alone under the flickering porch light, shrouded in exhaust fumes and total ruin.

As the tail lights of the sedan vanished around the corner, Arthur’s phone buzzed again in his hand. A single text message from an unknown number: Game over, Arthur. Meet me at the docks in thirty minutes, or the marshals get the unedited tapes.
