Chapter 5 - The Weight of Manslaughter

The word manslaughter hung in the damp air like a suffocating cloud. Clara stumbled backward, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared at Arthur with eyes wide with stark terror. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting erratic shadows across the concrete floor.
"What... what is he talking about, Arthur?" Clara’s voice was a fragile whisper, stripped of all its previous anger, leaving only a hollow, echoing shell of disbelief.
Arthur couldn’t breathe. The walls of the server room seemed to contract, pressing in on his chest until his lungs burned. He looked at Clara, then down at the floor, unable to meet her gaze. The dark suit that had felt like armor just an hour ago now felt like a straitjacket.
"It was an accident," Arthur choked out, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "The server room fire... the faulty wiring. We tried to salvage the mainframes, but the security door jammed. I got out. I... I thought Julian was right behind me."
"You locked me in, Arthur," Julian said softly, his voice dripping with venom as he stepped closer, the yellow light catching the faint, jagged scar running along his jawline—a permanent souvenir from the flames. "You hit the emergency seal from the outside to protect the proprietary drives from water damage, knowing full well I was still inside trying to manually override the system."
Clara shook her head violently, tears finally spilling over her lashes and cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. "No. No, that’s murder. You let a man burn, and then you built a life on top of it?"
"I didn't know he was alive until six months ago!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking with frantic desperation as he stepped toward Clara. "When he reached out, demanding payoffs, I did what I had to do to keep our family safe from the fallout!"
"By stealing from our children's trust?" Clara screamed, the restraint finally shattering completely. Her voice echoed off the concrete walls, bouncing back with a cruel, mocking resonance. "You didn't protect us, Arthur. You protected yourself. You traded our future to bury your past, and you used our kids' names to do it!"
Julian crossed his arms, watching the domestic wreckage with a cold, detached satisfaction. He tapped the flash drive against his palm rhythmically. "The drama is touching, truly. But sentimentality doesn't pay my legal fees or buy back the three years I lost staring at gray concrete walls. You have less than forty-eight hours, Arthur. Sign the house over, or I upload the video logs from that night directly to the police department."
Arthur turned back to Julian, his fists clenched so tight his fingernails dug deep into his palms. "Even if I sign the house over, how do I know you won't go to the police anyway? How do I know you won't destroy us piece by piece?"
Julian smiled, a humorless, razor-thin expression that didn't reach his eyes. "You don't, Arthur. That’s the beauty of leverage. You take a leap of faith, exactly like you made me do when you hit that button."
Before Arthur could lunge forward, a sudden, sharp sound echoed from the dark corridor behind them—a frantic rustling followed by a young boy’s voice calling out in sheer panic.
