Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Parking Lot

The frantic call from the darkness of the corridor froze everyone in place. Arthur spun around, his heart leaping into his throat, all thoughts of Julian Cross and the burning past instantly eclipsed by the sound of Leo’s terrified voice.
"Leo?" Arthur shouted, sprinting past the towering server racks toward the dim light of the exit. Clara was right behind him, her beige blouse fluttering as she chased the sound of her son's voice through the labyrinthine aisles.
They burst through the heavy steel loading dock door into the cool, biting night air. The flickering security light buzzed overhead, casting erratic, dancing shadows across the cracked asphalt of the parking lot. Their sedan sat bathed in the yellow glare, its doors wide open.
"Leo! Maya!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with maternal terror as she rushed toward the vehicle.
Leo emerged from behind the rear bumper, his black t-shirt smudged with dirt, breathing heavily and clutching Maya’s hand. Maya was crying softly, her little white dress stained with oil from the pavement.
"What happened? Are you okay?" Arthur dropped to his knees, grabbing Leo by the shoulders, his hands shaking violently as he inspected the boy for any sign of injury.
"A man," Leo stammered, pointing a trembling finger toward the perimeter fence where the shadows of the industrial park dissolved into dense woodland. "He... he was looking in the window. He tried to open Maya’s door."
Clara pulled both children into her arms, pressing them tightly against her chest as she glared up at Arthur with eyes burning through her tears. "This is what your secrets bought us, Arthur. Danger at our children's doorstep. We aren't safe anywhere as long as you're tied to this man."
Julian Cross stepped out of the loading dock doorway behind them, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his charcoal turtleneck. A faint, dark smile played on his lips as he surveyed the terrified family.
"It seems my associates are getting impatient," Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet asphalt. "They aren't as... patient as I am. They don't want houses or corporate buyouts, Arthur. They want blood for blood."
Arthur stood up slowly, stepping between Julian and his family, his fists clenched at his sides. "You said we had until Friday. You said this was between us."
"That was before your kids decided to wander out of the car," Julian replied, tilting his head with mock sympathy. "The clock is ticking faster now, Arthur. By dawn tomorrow, I want the signed deed on my desk, or my associates won't just look in your windows—they'll break them."
Without waiting for a response, Julian turned and melted back into the dark shadows of the open loading dock, the heavy steel door swinging shut behind him with a dull, echoing metallic thud.
Arthur stood frozen, the cold night wind chilling the sweat on his neck. Clara stood up slowly, her face hardened into an expression of absolute resolve. She didn't look at Arthur. Instead, she guided Leo and Maya back toward the passenger side of the car, her movements mechanical and precise.
"Get in the car, kids," Clara said quietly, her voice entirely devoid of warmth.
Arthur walked around to the driver's side, his mind racing through a dozen impossible options. He opened the door, slid behind the wheel, and turned the ignition. The engine roared to life, casting its bright beams across the desolate parking lot.

As Arthur shifted into drive and prepared to pull away, the dashboard screen suddenly flashed to life, overriding the radio with a live video feed from the house they had just left.
