Chapter 7 - The Digital Trap

Arthur’s thumb hovered over the mechanical keyboard of the encrypted laptop, the blue light casting an eerie glow across his tense features. On the screen, the blinking cursor waited inside the password entry box like a hungry mouth. The live feed of the backyard showed the hooded figure standing motionless by the dark water of the pool, the burner phone still pressed to his ear.
"I don't have my office password here," Arthur lied smoothly, his voice dropping an octave as he tried to buy time. "The main servers are down for maintenance. You know that."
"Don't insult my intelligence, Arthur," the distorted voice replied instantly through the phone speaker. "You updated the root keys yesterday afternoon from your home terminal. Type it in, or I send the wire instructions for the children's trust accounts to the federal prosecutor's office right now."
Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. The root keys. He had forgotten about the backup protocol he set up during the merger negotiations. If those files were accessed, not only would his financial ruin be absolute, but he would face federal prison time for wire fraud and embezzlement.
"If I do this, what guarantees do I have that you'll leave my family alone?" Arthur demanded, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the kitchen island.
"Guarantees?" The voice on the other end let out a cold, humorless laugh. "You forfeited the right to negotiate when you signed the first loan document, Arthur. You are simply closing a loop that you opened. Type the password. You have ten seconds."
On the screen, a countdown timer appeared in red numerals: 00:10... 00:09...
Arthur’s mind raced. If he entered the password, he handed over the keys to the entire corporate infrastructure, effectively destroying his career and handing complete control to people he had never even met. If he didn't, Sarah, Leo, and Lily would be dragged into a criminal nightmare that would shatter their lives forever.
00:05... 00:04...
Upstairs, a muffled sound caught his attention—a faint floorboard creak, followed by a child’s quiet sob. Sarah and the kids were listening to every second of this from the bedroom above.
With a heavy, defeated sigh, Arthur dropped his phone onto the counter, placed his trembling fingers on the keyboard, and began to type his master password into the terminal.

The screen flashed green for a fraction of a second. Then, the entire laptop display went completely black.
