Chapter 10 - The Front Breach

The sound of shattering glass at the front entrance shattered the tense silence of the hallway. Sarah screamed, pulling Lily tightly against her chest, while Leo stood frozen, his eyes wide with unchildlike terror. Arthur spun around on the landing, his heart pounding in his throat as heavy, booted footsteps surged across the foyer floorboards below.

"Get into the bedroom and lock the door!" Arthur yelled, shoving Sarah and the children down the upper hallway toward the master suite.

"Arthur, no!" Sarah cried, trying to turn back, but Arthur slammed the heavy wooden door shut between them and threw the deadbolt.

He turned back to face the stairs just as the shadow of a broad-shouldered man in tactical gear appeared at the top of the landing. The intruder wore a plain black balaclava, leaving only cold, calculating eyes visible above the fabric. In his right hand, he held a suppressed pistol, the barrel pointed straight at Arthur’s chest.

"End of the line, Arthur," a rough, gravelly voice echoed from beneath the mask. "Hand over the encrypted drive from the kitchen."

Arthur raised his hands slowly, stepping back until his spine hit the door of the master bedroom. His mind raced frantically, searching for an escape route, a weapon, anything to buy his family a few more minutes. "I don't have it. The laptop wiped itself."

The intruder chuckled softly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "Marcus wants confirmation codes, not excuses. And if you don't give them to us, we'll start with the boy."

A cold sweat broke out across Arthur’s back. The threat wasn't an empty one. These men had already proven they would stop at nothing to reclaim the phantom empire Marcus was building on the ruins of Arthur's life.

"You want the codes?" Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, unexpected calm. He slid his hand slowly toward his jacket pocket, where his phone was still powered on. "They're on my phone. But you'll have to take it from my cold, dead hands."

The intruder paused, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. "Drop the phone on the floor and kick it over here. Slowly."

Arthur nodded, pulling the phone from his pocket. Instead of dropping it, he tapped the screen with his thumb, initiating a live broadcast to the local police precinct—a failsafe emergency protocol he had set up during his corporate audit days.

Before the intruder could react, Arthur hurled the glowing phone directly at the man's face, lunging forward with all the desperate strength he had left.
