Chapter 13 - The Siren's Call

The wail of approaching sirens cut through the heavy night air, growing louder with every second as red and blue lights began to flash against the distant tree line. Marcus froze by the door of the SUV, his eyes darting down the dark street in momentary disbelief. The men behind him shifted uneasily, looking toward their leader for instructions.

"You called the state police, Arthur?" Marcus snarled, his polite veneer finally cracking to reveal the raw desperation underneath. "You arrogant fool! Do you have any idea what an audit will uncover once the state police get a warrant for the firm's servers?"

"I don't care," Arthur said steadily, standing his ground in the center of the driveway. "Let them look. Let them find everything. At least then the truth will finally be out in the open."

Marcus stepped forward, his face contorted with rage, raising his hand as if to strike his brother. But the blinding sweep of approaching headlights cut across the driveway, washing the scene in strobing red and blue. A state police cruiser skidded to a halt at the mouth of the driveway, followed immediately by a second unit that blocked Marcus’s SUV from behind.

Car doors slammed shut in unison. Sharp, authoritative voices cut through the night.

"State police! Stay where you are! Hands on your head where we can see them!"

The two men accompanying Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second before dropping their duffel bags and raising their hands. Marcus stood frozen between the two cruisers, his expression a mask of venomous defeat as two troopers advanced with flashlights drawn.

Sarah let out a long, ragged breath, her knees finally buckling as she leaned against the side of the house for support. Leo wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face in her beige blouse, while Lily clung quietly to her mother's hand.

Arthur turned back toward his family, the heavy weight in his chest lifting just enough for him to draw a full breath of cool night air. The empire was gone. The money was gone. The prestige, the suits, the corner office—all of it had vanished into the cold autumn night. But his family was standing right there, bruised and terrified, yet still alive.

A senior state trooper approached Arthur, notepad in hand, his face stern and professional under the glow of the overhead light bar.

"Are you Arthur Vance?" the trooper asked, shining his flashlight beam directly into Arthur’s face.

"Yes," Arthur replied, his voice firm and clear for the first time in months. "I need to file a full confession regarding corporate embezzlement and financial fraud at Vance Enterprises."

The trooper paused, lowering his pen slightly as he looked past Arthur toward Marcus, who was currently being cuffed and led toward the back of a cruiser. "That won't be necessary just yet, Mr. Vance. We received a complete data dump from an anonymous source downtown ten minutes ago. But there's someone inside your house you need to see right now."

Arthur frowned, a cold knot forming in his stomach. "Inside the house? Who is inside my house?"
