Chapter 8: The Dominoes Fall Downtown

While the corridor outside Trauma Bay Three dissolved into a whirlwind of flashing police lights, aggressive questioning from reporters, and the eventual handcuffing of the Vanguard security detail, inside the consultation room, the digital endgame was reaching its absolute climax. Marcus watched his monitoring screens with rapt attention as automated scripts executed across multiple secure government nodes.

“Boss, the DOJ package has cleared all verification gates,” Marcus announced, tapping the table with two fingers. “Simultaneous data dumps have just hit the desks of the federal prosecutor’s office in Seattle, the Associated Press, and three major congressional oversight committees. It’s out there. There’s no pulling it back now.”

Elena leaned back in her chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she had apparently been holding for hours. “The stock market just opened on the East Coast. Vanguard Healthcare shares are already tumbling in pre-market trading as automated trading bots pick up the initial wire reports on the federal investigation.”

Liam walked back into the command room, closing the door behind him to block out the noise of the hallway. He looked tired, the lingering dampness of his gray hoodie now merely a memory, but the intense, burning fire in his eyes had not dimmed in the slightest. He walked over to the small internal window that looked directly into Trauma Bay Three.

Inside, Sofia was sitting up slightly against the pillows, sipping water from a small paper cup handed to her by Dr. Hayes. Her color was returning, the flush of the artificial fever slowly giving way to healthy skin. She looked out through the glass, caught Liam’s gaze, and offered a small, tentative smile.

Liam smiled back, a genuine, profound expression of relief washing over his features for the first time in months. He pressed his palm against the glass, silently promising her that the nightmares of the mansion, the cold mornings on the patio, and the yellow bucket of ice water were finally, irrevocably over.

Just then, Confiom entered the room, closing the door quietly behind him. “The local captain handled the extraction of Sarah and her men. They’re being transported down to the central precinct for formal booking. Her corporate legal counsel tried to block it, but with the DOJ files already public, even their best lawyers are jumping ship to save their own licenses.”

“Good,” Liam said, turning away from the window to face his team. “We stay here until Sofia is fully stabilized and discharged. Then we move to a secure location outside their jurisdiction while the federal indictments are handed down.”
