Chapter 10: Reclaiming the Foundation

Three days later, the rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, bright autumn afternoon that dried the damp asphalt of the suburban estate where the nightmare had begun. Liam stood on the paved patio once more, but this time, the atmosphere was entirely different. There were no yellow buckets, no cruel orders from second-story balconies, and no shivering children locked outside in the dawn.
Instead, the house was utterly silent, seized by federal marshals awaiting court-ordered asset forfeiture. Liam had returned briefly under escort to collect Clara’s personal journals, family photographs, and the remaining heirlooms that Sarah had tried to lock away in the estate’s secure archives.
He stepped through the shattered sliding glass doors—now temporarily patched with heavy plywood—and walked into the spacious living room where Clara’s grand piano still stood against the far wall. The keys were covered in a thin layer of dust, but as Liam approached, running his hand gently across the polished mahogany wood, he felt an overwhelming sense of closure. Clara’s spirit wasn’t trapped in this cold, sterile monument to corporate greed; her memory lived on in Sofia’s resilient laughter and the unshakable determination that had driven them through the dark.
Confiom walked into the room from the hallway, carrying a heavy cardboard box filled with framed photographs and leather-bound journals. “Federal agents just finished inventorying the vault upstairs. They found Clara’s complete, unaltered research notes hidden behind a false panel in the study. The prosecutors say it’s the smoking gun that guarantees maximum sentences for every executive involved.”
“Leave them in the car, Confiom,” Liam instructed, taking one last look around the room where so much psychological warfare had been waged against his family. “We’re never coming back to this house. Let the bank take it, let the state auction it off, let them turn it into whatever cynical corporate retreat they want. We’re leaving this place behind permanently.”

“Where to, Boss?” Confiom asked, shifting the box comfortably in his arms. “We have safe houses set up in three different states, and the legal team has already secured a temporary residence for you and Sofia in the Pacific Northwest.”
“Let’s go home to the mountains,” Liam said, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Somewhere far away from glass doors, concrete patios, and corporate boardrooms. Somewhere Sofia can run outside in the grass without anyone telling her she’s not allowed inside.”
