Chapter 5: The Vanguard Vanguard Arrives

Before the confirmation prompt on Elena’s screen could even fade to green, the fluorescent lights overhead flickered violently and died, plunging the hospital corridor into emergency red illumination. The low, ominous hum of the backup diesel generators kicked in seconds later, casting long, crimson shadows across the teal-tiled floors.

In the command room, Marcus cursed softly as his monitors flashed amber warning lights. “We’re being hit with a localized electromagnetic pulse or a heavy-duty denial-of-service flood. They’re trying to sever our uplink!”

“Hold the connection, Marcus,” Confiom barked, drawing a sleek, compact sidearm from his shoulder holster and checking the magazine with a practiced click. He moved swiftly to the heavy metal door, peering through the small wire-reinforced glass window into the hallway. “We’ve got company. Three black-clad corporate security units just stepped off the elevators. Standard tactical gear, non-lethal suppression loads, but they’re moving with institutional authority.”

Liam stepped past Confiom, his expression entirely unreadable. The dampness in his gray hoodie had long since faded, replaced by the steady, dry heat of pure determination. “They think they can walk in here and reclaim their property like this is a corporate asset recovery mission. They don't realize Sofia is a human being.”

“Boss, protocols say we fall back through the maintenance stairwell,” Confiom advised, his hand resting on the door handle. “St. Jude’s has an underground utility tunnel that connects to the municipal transit line. We can get Sofia out of the city before they lock down the perimeter.”

“No,” Liam said quietly, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding finality. “If we run now, they’ll hunt us across state lines forever. Every time we settle down, they’ll find another Sarah, another bucket of ice water, another quiet hospital ward to trap us in. We end this right here, on their terms, by breaking their foundation.”

Liam turned to Elena. “Is the DOJ package fully uploaded?”

“Ninety-eight percent,” Elena replied, her fingers flying across the keys despite the amber flashing warnings. “Hold on… nine-nine… done! The dead-man’s switch is live. If anything happens to us, the whole world gets the files in ten minutes.”

“Good,” Liam said. He opened the consultation room door and stepped directly into the crimson-lit hallway, facing the oncoming tide of corporate enforcers without an ounce of hesitation.
