Chapter 8: Turning the Tides

The sirens grew deafeningly loud as three unmarked federal cruisers and two local police units careened around the corner, their tires screeching against the asphalt as they formed a tactical barricade around the loading dock. Doors flew open, and armed agents in tactical vests swarmed the area, shouting orders and drawing their weapons.
“Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Hands on your head, now!” boomed an authoritative voice through a loudspeaker.
Marcus’s two heavies instantly froze, their hands shooting into the air before the tactical team could tackle them to the ground and slap heavy steel handcuffs around their wrists. Marcus himself stared in stunned disbelief as two agents closed in on him from either side. He slowly released his grip on Arthur’s jacket, his face darkening with furious realization.
“You set a trap,” Marcus hissed under his breath as an agent shoved him against the side of the truck, patting him down with swift, practiced efficiency.
“I gave you a chance to walk away,” Arthur replied, straightening his jacket and catching his breath. “You chose intimidation instead.”
Special Agent Miller, a tall woman with sharp features and a federal badge gleaming on her tactical vest, briskly walked over to Arthur. She extended a hand, offering a firm, professional shake.
“Mr. Hayes? I’m Special Agent Miller, Federal Cyber Crimes Division. We received your automated cloud transmission twenty minutes ago, along with the real-time metadata syncing from the tracking fob recovered at your residence. You’ve just handed us the missing puzzle piece we needed to dismantle this entire corporate embezzlement and intimidation ring.”
Arthur let out a long, shaky breath, the crushing weight that had suffocated his chest for the past week finally beginning to lift. “Is my family safe?”
“We have two units stationed at your residence right now. They’re completely secure,” Agent Miller assured him, nodding toward her subordinates who were currently hauling Marcus into the back of a detention van. “That dog of yours really did a number on their operative during the break-in, didn’t he? Left enough DNA on that tracking fob to put half these guys away for a decade.”
Arthur smiled faintly, thinking of Buddy curled up on Ryan’s bed, the faithful golden retriever who had inadvertently blown open a massive criminal conspiracy just by doing what dogs do best—protecting his home.
“He’s a very good boy,” Arthur said quietly.

“Let’s get you back home to your family, Mr. Hayes. Your ordeal is finally over,” Agent Miller said, gesturing toward one of the escort vehicles.
As Arthur climbed into the back of the cruiser for the ride home, the morning sun finally broke through the heavy cloud cover, casting a warm, golden light over the industrial park. The nightmare was ending, and a new, safer chapter awaited him and his family back in the quiet suburbs.
