Chapter 4: The Hidden Drive

Midnight descended upon the neighborhood, wrapping the house in absolute silence. Upstairs, the faint sound of Ryan’s even breathing signaled that the exhausted boy had finally drifted into a restless sleep, with Buddy curled faithfully across the foot of his bed. Downstairs, the study remained dark except for the amber glow of the streetlamp filtering through the sheer curtains.
Arthur sat at his mahogany desk, the desk lamp casting a harsh circle of light over a collection of old family photo albums. He pulled out the bottom drawer, checking the false wooden panel at the very back. With a gentle push of his thumb, the hidden compartment clicked open, revealing a small, matte-black encrypted USB flash drive. This was the digital insurance policy Arthur had downloaded from his corporate workstation three weeks ago. It contained undeniable proof of embezzling, fraud, and illegal surveillance orchestrated by the senior partners at his engineering firm—the very same executives who had hired Marcus to clean house.
Clara stood in the doorway, her silhouette framed by the dim hallway light. She held a glass of water, her fingers trembling slightly.
“Are you sure that’s going to work?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “If we give it to them, will they leave us alone?”
“They won’t,” Arthur said grimly, not taking his eyes off the small metal drive resting in his palm. “People like Marcus don’t leave loose ends. If I hand this over without a backup plan, they’ll eliminate us anyway to ensure absolute silence. Buddy wasn't just a pet, Clara. During the break-in, the intruder dropped a secondary tracking fob while fighting off the dog. Ryan picked it up and hid it in the dog’s collar pouch. That’s why they wanted the dog gone so badly. They didn’t just want to punish us; they wanted that fob back.”
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “A tracking fob? Ryan has it?”
May you like
“He does. Or rather, he was holding the collar when I stopped them in the driveway,” Arthur corrected, sliding the flash drive into his pocket. “The fob links directly to Marcus’s encrypted communication network and his personal vehicle logs. It’s our leverage. It proves the break-in wasn't a random burglary, but a targeted corporate hit ordered from the top.”
Arthur stood up, his posture rigid with newfound resolve. There would be no more negotiating with criminals. They had threatened his son, terrified his wife, and tried to steal the one thing keeping his family safe. It was time to take the fight directly to them, using the very evidence they were desperate to bury.
