Chapter 2: Beneath the Surface

The silence that followed Arthur’s outburst was deafening. Marcus slowly closed the tailgate of the dark pickup truck, the metallic latch clicking shut with a finality that sent a chill down Arthur’s spine. Clara stood frozen near the garage, her shoulders hunched as if she were trying to make herself invisible. She avoided Arthur’s gaze, staring intently at the cracked concrete between her shoes. That guilty avoidance confirmed every dark suspicion Arthur had harbored since the police left their house three days ago. Clara had known about this sale. She had agreed to it out of fear, desperation, or perhaps self-preservation.

Ryan clung desperately to the red leash, his small knuckles turning white. The boy’s bruised face was a testament to the night of the break-in, a night when he had witnessed something he was never supposed to see. Arthur knelt slightly, placing a protective, trembling hand on his son’s shaking shoulder, feeling the rapid, panicked rhythm of the boy’s breathing.

“You weren't getting rid of Buddy because he was loud,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register as he turned his blazing eyes back toward Marcus. “You weren't getting rid of the dog for nuisance. You were getting rid of the witness!”

Marcus offered a thin, chilling smile that did not reach his cold eyes. He leaned against the side of the truck, entirely unbothered by the accusation. In this quiet, manicured American suburb, secrets were currency, and violence was often masked by polite smiles and closed doors. Arthur realized instantly that Marcus was not a simple pet buyer. He was an operative, a fixer sent to tie up loose ends after a corporate espionage scheme at Arthur’s firm had gone violently sideways.

Clara finally looked up, tears brimming in her eyes. “Arthur, please. If we don’t let Buddy go, they won't stop. They know everything.”

“They know nothing that we can’t fight,” Arthur countered fiercely, refusing to back down.

Marcus tapped his fingers against the truck door, breaking the tense standoff with a calculated calm. “You have twenty-four hours to hand over the remaining encrypted drives, Arthur. Your wife made a smart deal to keep your boy safe. Don't ruin it by playing the hero.”

With those chilling words, Marcus opened the driver's side door, slid inside, and started the engine. The low rumble of the truck vibrated through the driveway pavement. Arthur tightened his grip on Ryan, pulling his son and the golden retriever into a desperate, protective embrace as the truck reversed into the street, tail-lights glowing like embers in the gathering dusk.
