Chapter 3

The security hub smelled of ozone and hot circuit boards. Julian stood over the central console, watching the digital playback feeds while the head guard, Marcus, furiously tapped commands into the mainframe. On the third-floor camera angles, the corridors were entirely empty, bathed in the sterile, amber glow of emergency lighting. But the timestamp logs told a terrifying, undeniable story: at precisely 3:15 PM, just as the birthday celebration was getting underway in the grand hall, the biometric seal on the western service elevator had been manually bypassed.

"Who authorized the override, Marcus?" Julian asked, his voice deadpan, masking a volcano of pure fury.

Marcus swallowed hard, his eyes darting across the scrolling terminal data. "Sir, the system shows it was accessed using a Class-A master override. There are only two physical cards in existence with that level of clearance. Yours... and Elena's."

Julian froze. The air in the climate-controlled room suddenly felt thick, heavy, and impossible to inhale. He slowly turned his head to look through the reinforced glass partition into the adjoining lounge, where Elena sat on a velvet sofa, quietly rocking Maya to sleep in the yellow floral dress. She looked serene, exhausted, and deeply worried, holding the child close against her light blue dress.

Could the woman he had trusted with his life, the mother of his child, have opened the door to the monster who had terrorized their family years ago?

"Check the secondary access logs for the guest house," Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "And pull the vehicle registry from the eastern gate cameras over the last forty-eight hours. I want every single frame."

Marcus complied instantly, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced precision. A series of high-definition security clips popped up on the secondary monitor, showing the rain-slicked driveway of the estate. For several minutes, nothing appeared except the swaying branches of the ancient oak trees. Then, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the service entrance at midnight the previous night. The driver remained shrouded in deep shadow, but a single detail caught Julian's eye—a distinctive silver ring glinting on the driver's left hand.

Julian leaned closer to the monitor, his tattooed fists gripping the edge of the metal console so hard his knuckles turned completely white. He recognized that ring. It belonged to his own younger brother, David, who was currently supposed to be in Zurich managing European operations.

Marcus hit pause on the video, freezing the image of the black sedan right as the rear door clicked open, revealing a familiar, menacing silhouette stepping out into the rain.
