Chapter 15
The heavy boots of federal agents echoed up the grand staircase in a synchronized rhythm that signaled the absolute end of an era. Julian didn't move to reach for his weapon, nor did he make a move toward the balcony doors. He simply stood tall in the center of the nursery, his white shirt stained with dust and blood, watching as the armed federal agents poured through the double doors with their weapons drawn and lasers targeted on his chest.
"Julian Vance! Put your hands behind your back!" the lead federal agent commanded, his voice ringing out with absolute authority.
Julian raised his hands slowly, offering no resistance as heavy steel handcuffs were snapped onto his wrists with a cold, definitive click. He cast one final glance toward Elena, who stood holding Maya close while Lily clutched the hem of her light blue dress. There were no words left to say between them; the wreckage of their lives lay scattered around the room just like the pink birthday cake on the marble floor downstairs.
As the agents hauled Julian toward the hallway, another team rushed past them to detain David, who was coughing and sputtering as he was hoisted up from the Persian rug. The glow of the computer terminal in the corner finally flickered and died as the master server farm in the basement was remotely wiped by Marcus, who had already vanished into the night like the ghost he truly was.

They led Julian down the grand staircase, past the ruined remnants of the multi-tiered pink and white cake, and out through the massive oak front doors into the blinding glare of the police spotlights. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the asphalt slick and reflective under the red and blue flashing lights of a dozen cruiser cars. A crowd of reporters surged forward behind the police barricades, shouting questions, thrusting microphones into the air, and flashing cameras that blinded him with white-hot intensity.
Julian kept his chin up, his expression sharp and serious, his tattooed forearms bound as he was pushed into the back of the transport vehicle. As the heavy metal doors slammed shut, plunging the interior into shadow, he stared out the reinforced window one last time at the sprawling, darkened estate. The empire had crumbled to dust, the secrets were laid bare for the world to see, and the pink cake was nothing more than sticky debris on the floor—yet for the first time in five years, the ghosts of the past were finally, completely gone.
