Chapter 1

The multi-tiered pink and white birthday cake lay ruined on the pristine marble floor, surrounded by bruised rose petals and sticky pools of raspberry filling. Julian Vance towered over the mess, his broad shoulders tense beneath a stark white shirt, his forearms tight with dark tattoos that seemed to pulse under the crystal chandelier. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched near his ear. He looked down at the absolute destruction of his daughter's fifth-birthday centerpiece, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that commanded immediate silence from the armed guards lining the perimeter.

"Why did you do that?" Julian demanded, his gaze snapping from the sticky floor to his wife, Elena, who knelt hurriedly on the polished stone.

Elena was wearing a light blue dress that pooled around her knees as she wrapped her arms protectively around little Maya. Maya wore a yellow floral dress, now stained with pink frosting, and pink sneakers that kicked helplessly against the floor. The five-year-old’s face was smeared with tears, her chest heaving with ragged, terrified breaths.

"Don't let Ethan eat it," Maya sobbed, her voice cracking with a raw, visceral fear that sent a cold shiver straight down Elena's spine.

Julian’s sharp, serious gaze narrowed instantly, the name hanging heavy and toxic in the opulent room. Ethan was not supposed to be anywhere near this private wing, let alone near the child's birthday celebration. Julian took a heavy step forward, his boots crunching on the ruined sugar paste.

"What man?" Julian barked, the question slicing through the tense air like a razor, his eyes locking onto his daughter's tear-drenched face.

Maya continued pointing a trembling, sticky finger toward the shadowy western corridor, looking up at her father with wide, pleading eyes. She sobbed heavily, the small bones in her shoulders shaking beneath the bright fabric of her dress.

"He said nobody would know," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the heavy breathing of the guards. "Find him."

Julian dropped to one knee, the white fabric of his trousers brushing the sticky floor, ignoring the mess entirely as a dark realization dawned in his eyes.
