Chapter 2 - The Viper’s Mark

The silence that fell over the sunlit park was absolute, broken only by the distant rustling of leaves and the frantic buzzing of summer insects. Beneath Arthur Vance’s knee, the heavily tattooed biker stopped thrashing entirely. The aggressive smirk that had twisted his features vanished, replaced by a mask of primal, freezing terror. His chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked gasps against the fine linen of his beige shirt.
Arthur did not move his knee an inch. He remained a monolith of controlled menace, his navy blue suit catching the harsh glare of the midday sun. His gold-ringed fingers hovered just above the man's collar, ready to deliver a final, crushing blow if necessary. But violence was no longer required. The small, silver pin shaped like a coiled viper had done its work.
"You recognize it, don't you, Mason?" Arthur asked, his voice a lethal whisper meant for the biker's ears alone.
Mason swallowed hard, his throat bobbing frantically. Beads of cold sweat broke out across his tattooed forehead, mixing with the dust of the lawn.
"I... I didn't know," Mason stammered, his tough-guy facade completely shattered. "If I had known it was your family... Boss, I swear on my life, I would never have approached them."
Over by the barbecue station, the blonde woman in the beige lace dress, Evelyn, hurried over, clutching a trembling Maya to her side. Leo scrambled up from the grass, his white polo shirt ruined, hiding behind his father's leg while still sobbing quietly.
"Arthur, stop," Evelyn pleaded, her voice trembling. "The park rangers are coming. People are filming us. Let him go."
Arthur ignored her, his eyes locked onto Mason’s dilated pupils. "You thought you could test my son? You thought the past was buried just because I traded the asphalt for boardrooms?"
Mason shook his head violently. "It was a message. From the Syndicate. They wanted to see if the old ghost of the North District was still listening."
Arthur’s expression darkened further, a terrifying shadow crossing his features. He leaned in closer, until his lips brushed Mason's ear.

"Tell them the ghost is awake," Arthur hissed.
With a swift, disdainful shove, Arthur released the biker and stood up, smoothing his suit jacket. As Mason scrambled backward in the dirt like a wounded animal, a siren wailed in the distance, announcing the arrival of the authorities. But as the police cruiser pulled up to the park gates, a man in a black tactical vest stepped out from the passenger seat, ignoring the flashing lights, and approached Arthur with a terrified salute, slipping a sealed black envelope into his hand.
