Chapter 1 - The Broken Grass

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the sprawling green lawns of Oakridge Park, turning the air thick with the scent of barbecue smoke and freshly cut blades. Beneath the canopy of an ancient oak tree, seven-year-old Leo writhed helplessly in the dirt, his white polo shirt stained with green grass and dust. Above him loomed a heavy-set, bald man with intricate black ink sprawling across his thick neck and down his forearms. The tattooed stranger wore a light beige button-down shirt and grey trousers, his large hand pressed firmly against the weeping boy's chest.
A few feet away, nine-year-old Maya stood frozen in her floral dress, her hands covering her mouth as thin, silent tears cut tracks through the dirt on her cheeks. Nearby, a blonde woman in an elegant beige lace dress dropped a paper plate, her eyes widening in absolute terror as she watched the confrontation unfold on the sunlit lawn.
"Get off me!" Leo shrieked, his voice cracking with pure panic. "Get him off me! Daddy, help!"
From the distance of the catered barbecue station, an older man in an expensive navy blue dress suit moved with terrifying speed. His white shirt cuffs gleamed beneath the sunlight, and gold rings caught the glare as he strode forward. Arthur Vance did not shout or panic. His face was a mask of cold, controlled fury. He closed the distance between the grill and the oak tree in seconds, his hand reaching out to grab the tattooed man firmly by the shoulder.
"Take your hands off my children," Arthur said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth.
The tattooed man slowly turned his head, his sneer exposing yellowing teeth. He tightened his grip on Leo for a fraction of a second before releasing the boy and pivoting to face Arthur. The stranger grabbed the lapel of Arthur's expensive navy suit, bunching the fabric in his fist with deliberate disrespect.
"What are you going to do about it, boss?" the biker mocked, his breath smelling of stale beer and cheap tobacco. "You think a suit makes you untouchable out here in the real world?"
Without blinking, Arthur shifted his weight. In a fluid, devastatingly efficient movement, he swept the biker's leg from beneath him. The heavier man crashed hard onto the grass, the wind knocked out of him in a heavy grunt as Arthur pinned him with a knee against his sternum. Around them, guests and park rangers froze, smartphones held high.
"You wanted to teach my son strength?" Arthur whispered, staring down with eyes as cold as winter stone. "Remember who taught you fear."
May you like
The biker gasped for air, his eyes darting to Arthur's lapel. As the wind caught the fabric, a small, silver pin shaped like a coiled viper gleamed in the sunlight, causing the pinned man to instantly stop struggling and turn utterly pale.
