Chapter 7 - The Emergency Protocol

The harsh wail of the subterranean alarm drowned out the steady hum of the cooling fans, turning the sterile server vault into a flashing red-and-white war zone. The countdown timer on the main monitor stuttered, freezing mid-sequence as the screen flashed a bright, warning amber.
Arthur’s calm exterior vanished in a fraction of a second. He spun around, grabbing the lead operative by the tactical vest.
"What system override just tripped the primary grid?" Arthur demanded, his voice cutting sharply through the screeching siren. "I locked out external access ten minutes ago!"
The operative’s hands flew across his wrist communicator, tapping furiously at the built-in keypad. "Director, it's not an external hack. The override is coming from inside the secondary sector—the subterranean archives beneath the old courthouse annex."
Clara’s fingers raced across the terminal keyboard, trying to counter-command the incoming signal. Her brow furrowed in intense concentration, the blood stain on her temple stark against her pale skin.
"It's not an automated script," Clara said, her voice tight with disbelief. "Someone physically connected a hardline terminal to the legacy mainframe down in the vault beneath the town square. They're downloading the master architectural blueprints."
Julian watched the chaos unfold, a sudden, fragile spark of hope igniting in his chest. He wasn't the only one who had planned for contingencies. If someone had managed to access the legacy mainframe beneath the courthouse, it meant the investigation was far bigger than he had ever imagined.
"You thought you severed all the connections, Arthur," Julian said, a faint, defiant smile breaking through the blood on his lips. "You can burn my laptop, you can blow up Marcus's van, but you can't erase a vault that was built fifty years before your corporation even bought this land."
Arthur shoved the operative away and stepped right up to Julian, his face dark with suppressed fury. He reached out, grabbing Julian by the collar of his white shirt and slamming him hard against the metal server rack.
"Who else knows about the legacy archive?" Arthur hissed, spittle flying from his lips. "Who did you leave behind to trigger the secondary protocol?"
Julian didn't flinch. He looked straight into Arthur's furious eyes, refusing to give him the satisfaction of an answer. "You're too late, Arthur. The blueprints are already out."
Clara slammed her fist onto the terminal desk as the monitor suddenly shifted from red warning text to a clean, bright blue screen displaying a complete schematic of the town’s underground tunnel network.
"Too late, Father," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The files are syncing to an off-site satellite relay as we speak. We've been compromised."
Arthur slowly released Julian’s collar, stepping back as the gravity of the situation settled over him. The absolute control he had maintained throughout the evening was fracturing at the seams.
"Initiate Protocol Zero," Arthur commanded, his voice dead and terrifyingly flat.
The lead operative froze, turning his masked face toward Arthur in hesitation. "Director... Protocol Zero? That will trigger a total lockdown of the entire municipal grid, cutting power to civilian sectors and initiating controlled demolition of the secondary archives."
"Do it now!" Arthur roared, the restraint completely shattering.

As the operative slammed his palm onto a red safety switch on the console, the lights in the server room went pitch black, leaving only the erratic glow of emergency flares.
