Chapter 1 - The Chandelier Falls

Light cascaded from the massive crystal chandelier above, casting hard, brilliant glares across the polished marble floors of the grand foyer. Julian stood near the center of the room, his white button-down shirt stark against the dark blood smudged across his lips. He let out a slow, deliberate breath, shifting his weight. In his right hand, a leather whip hung limply, its tip resting against the floor with a soft hiss. A few feet away, Clara sat crumpled against the base of a marble pillar, her white dress stained with dirt and the bright crimson running from a cut near her hairline. She trembled, tears carving clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks.
Julian looked down at her, his expression disturbingly calm. He tilted his head slightly, letting a faint, unbothered smile touch his mouth.
"Enjoy it," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly across the cavernous space. "There's plenty of time left."
Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed from the arched double doors at the far end of the hall. Arthur burst into the room, his fifty-year-old face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. Dressed in a stiff green jacket and worn jeans that felt entirely out of place in the opulent mansion, he rushed straight toward Julian, pointing an accusing, shaking finger. Arthur's chest heaved as he stopped a few feet away, his eyes wide with fury.
"Who gave you permission to do that?!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking slightly with the raw intensity of his anger.
Julian didn’t flinch. He slowly wiped a smear of blood from his chin with the back of his hand, his gaze locking steadily onto Arthur’s furious eyes.
"Permission?" Julian asked, his tone dripping with quiet mockery. "Arthur, you mistake your position here. This town hasn't belonged to you in years; you've just been keeping the seat warm."
Arthur stepped closer, ignoring the insult as he dropped to his knees beside Clara. He pulled her gently toward his shoulder, glaring fiercely up at the young man standing above them.
"You dare hit my daughter?" Arthur hissed, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a menacing promise. "My family own this town!"
Julian laughed softly, a low sound that seemed to infuriate the older man even more.
Without breaking eye contact, Arthur reached into the pocket of his green jacket and pulled out a heavy-duty military walkie-talkie. His thumb pressed the side button with a sharp click.
"You're done for," Arthur whispered into the device, his expression turning terrifyingly grim. "Code black for all three of you."
Julian’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, sharp realization that something had just shifted.
Arthur stared up at Julian, his face tense with absolute hatred.
"You picked the wrong family to mess with," Arthur said.

Before Julian could step back, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the courtyard outside.
