Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Signal

The low, heavy rumble traveled up through the marble foundations, shaking the delicate crystal pendants of the chandelier overhead until they chimed in a dissonant, frantic chorus. Julian stumbled forward, catching himself on the edge of a mahogany side table. His mind raced back to the parked surveillance van half a mile down the private access road, where Marcus was currently plugged into the town’s mainframe.
"No," Julian muttered, shaking his head as denial flared in his chest. "Marcus is smart. He has decentralized proxies. He wouldn't download the raw ledger without a firewall wrapper."
Arthur didn't bother to answer with words. He simply turned his wrist and tapped the screen of a ruggedized tactical tablet strapped to his forearm. A live thermal feed blinked to life on the small, glowing display, showing a dense cluster of trees near the south gate. A second later, a bright, concentrated bloom of white and orange light blossomed on the screen, instantly devouring the thermal signature of a parked vehicle.
Clara walked over to her father, peering down at the screen with absolute indifference. She adjusted the collar of her white dress, the blood on her face now nothing more than dried paint.
"Marcus was brilliant at writing decryption algorithms," Clara said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "Too bad he never learned that every digital door my father builds has a kinetic tripwire attached to the frame. You came here thinking you were exposing a corrupt politician, Julian. You walked right into a live-fire containment drill."
The lead operative stepped closer, his carbine still shouldered. "Director, cleanup crew is inbound for Sector Four. What are your instructions regarding the remaining assets in the city?"
Arthur glanced up from his wrist tablet, his expression hardening into absolute steel. He looked at Julian, who stood frozen, the realization of his catastrophic miscalculation finally settling into his bones.
"Let the remaining two members of their little investigative unit wander around the outer perimeter for another hour," Arthur commanded, his voice cold and authoritative. "Let them think they still have a chance to escape. Let them taste hope before we close the box."
Julian clenched his fists so hard his fingernails dug deep into his palms. "You're monsters. You run this entire county like a corporate slaughterhouse, and anyone who tries to look behind the curtain gets erased."
"We don't slaughter people, Julian. We manage liabilities," Arthur corrected smoothly, taking another step forward. "And right now, you are the highest-priority liability on our ledger. But before we wipe your name from the servers, I want to know one specific detail."
Arthur leaned in close, his breath warm against Julian's ear.
"Who inside the federal oversight committee handed you our encryption keys?" Arthur asked, his voice dropping to an icy murmur. "Because a twenty-year-old hacker from the city doesn't walk through my front gates without a high-level sponsor holding the map."
Julian stared straight ahead, his jaw locked tight. He refused to give them the name, refusing to hand over the mentor who had risked everything to send him into this nightmare.
Clara stepped around her father, stopping just inches from Julian. She reached down, picked up the discarded leather whip from the floor, and ran her fingers slowly down its braided length.
"You're very loyal, Julian," Clara whispered, tilting her head with a chilling smile. "Let's see how long that loyalty holds up when we visit the basement server room."

Before Julian could react, the tactical operative behind him struck the back of his knees with the heavy stock of a carbine, sending him crashing to the floor.
