Chapter 7

The rain had returned, drumming a relentless, dreary rhythm against the tall windows of the boutique. Inside, the lights were harsh and flickering, casting long, jittery shadows across the empty showroom. Julian sat slumped on a velvet stool near the back counter, a bottle of expensive Scotch sitting half-empty on the glass display case beside him. His tie was loose, his hair disheveled, and the confident, charismatic facade he had worn for years was completely shattered.

The bell above the front door chimed, cutting through the heavy silence. Julian didn't look up, assuming it was another angry creditor or one of Marcus Vance's junior associates delivering another crushing legal notice.

"I told you, we're working on the restructuring," Julian slurred, his voice thick with alcohol and exhaustion.

"It's not Vance, Julian."

Julian jerked his head up, blinking through the glare of the overhead lights. Clara stood just inside the doorway, wearing a sensible trench coat instead of her usual glamorous evening attire. Her expression was devoid of warmth, replaced by a cold, calculating annoyance.

"My father called off the wedding," Clara said bluntly, walking over to the counter and looking down at the half-empty bottle of Scotch with disgust. "He reviewed the asset disclosures your former wife provided to our legal team this morning. You used collateral you didn't even legally own to secure our family's capital investment. That’s not ambitious, Julian. That’s outright fraud."

Julian stumbled off the stool, his hands trembling as he reached out toward her. "Clara, wait. We can fix this. Elena is just being vindictive—she’s trying to punish me because she couldn't handle our success. Vance is a reasonable man; we can renegotiate the terms—"

"My father doesn't negotiate with liars who can't even manage their own marriages, let alone a multi-million-dollar retail operation," Clara interrupted, stepping back to avoid his touch as if he carried a contagious disease. "The board is filing an injunction to freeze all boutique assets by tomorrow morning. You’re finished, Julian. Don't ever call my phone again."

She turned on her heel and walked out, the door swinging shut behind her with a definitive, chilling click. Julian stood alone in the center of the empty showroom, the silence pressing in on him from all sides. He looked at the two diamond rings still resting innocently on the glass surface where Elena had placed them days ago. He reached out with a trembling hand, picking them up, but the metal felt dead and cold against his skin. The empire he had sacrificed his integrity to build had vanished like smoke, leaving him with nothing but his own hollow reflection.
