Chapter 4

By midnight, the apartment was half-dismantled. Three cardboard boxes sat taped and stacked near the front door, containing the tangible remnants of Elena’s adult life. She sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, wearing a simple cotton t-shirt and grey lounge pants, drinking a cup of chamomile tea she had brewed in the silent kitchen. The quiet of the apartment was interrupted by a sharp, insistent knocking at the front door.

Elena frowned, setting her mug down on the nightstand. Julian had the code to the front door; if it were him, he would have simply walked in, as he always did, assuming the world bent to his convenience. She walked down the short hallway and peered through the peephole. Standing in the dimly lit corridor was a woman with short, practical blonde hair and a worn trench coat. It was Sarah, Julian’s younger sister, whom Elena hadn't spoken to in over a year.

Elena unlocked the door and pulled it open a few inches, a cautious expression on her face. Sarah looked exhausted, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with a mixture of anger and deep sorrow.

"Elena, thank God you're still here," Sarah said, her voice trembling slightly. "Julian called me. He’s completely spiraling. He said you walked out and that the investors are threatening to pull funding because of some mess with Clara."

Elena opened the door wider, stepping back to let her former sister-in-law enter. "Julian made his choices, Sarah. I had nothing to do with how he managed his business or his personal life."

Sarah stepped into the sterile living room, wrapping her trench coat tightly around herself as if trying to shield herself from the cold realization of what her brother had become. "I know. I tried to warn him years ago, Elena. When Mom died and left us that modest inheritance, Julian used his share to fund the storefront, but he borrowed heavily against future profits behind our backs. Clara isn't just a consultant; she’s the daughter of Marcus Vance, the primary venture capitalist who’s been buying up commercial real estate in the district. Julian thought marrying into Vance's circle would secure his empire permanently. He traded you for a corporate merger."

The words hung heavily in the air, confirming the vague suspicions Elena had harbored during the final months of their relationship. It wasn't just a stray infidelity born of vanity; it was a calculated, cold-blooded transaction designed to elevate Julian's social standing at the expense of everything they had built together.

"He thought he was being clever," Elena said softly, her voice remarkably steady. "He thought I would swallow my pride and stay quiet because I was invested in the brand's success."

"You were the brand, Elena," Sarah said fiercely, stepping closer and grasping Elena’s hand. "Without you, the books are a disaster. Julian doesn't even know how to run the inventory software you customized. He's going to crash, and he's going to try to drag you down with him if he can."
