Chapter 5

The morning sun cast long, angled shadows across the hardwood floor of the apartment. Elena woke before her alarm, her mind sharp and focused. The visit from Sarah the night before had provided the final pieces of a puzzle she had been unwilling to complete for months. Julian was not just unfaithful; he was financially exposed, over-leveraged, and dangerously dependent on Marcus Vance's capital—capital that Vance would undoubtedly pull the moment he realized Julian’s personal life was a public relations liability.
Elena dressed in a simple navy blue blazer, white silk blouse, and tailored trousers. She tied her dark wavy hair back into a low, elegant ponytail, projecting an image of quiet professionalism. Before leaving the apartment for the last time, she picked up her laptop bag and her legal binder. Inside the binder were copies of every foundational document, incorporation filing, and supplier contract bearing her signature—documents Julian had likely forgotten she kept duplicates of.
When she arrived at the boutique downtown, the metal security gate was half-pulled down, and a handwritten sign taped to the glass read: Closed for Inventory. Through the tinted glass, Elena could see Julian pacing frantically near the front counter, his navy blue suit jacket discarded over a chair, his white dress shirt wrinkled at the cuffs. Clara was nowhere to be seen, likely having retreated to her father's estate the moment the initial panic set in.
Elena walked up to the side entrance, tapping firmly on the glass. Julian spun around, his face lighting up with a desperate, pathetic hope that vanished the second he saw who was standing outside. He hurried over, fumbling with the deadbolt before yanking the door open.
"Elena! You came back," Julian breathed, reaching out as if to take her hands.
Elena stepped back smoothly, avoiding his touch with practiced ease. "I didn't come back for you, Julian. I came for my property and to ensure my name is legally severed from this enterprise before your creditors start knocking."

Julian’s face flushed with sudden, indignant anger—the familiar flash of temper he always displayed when things slipped beyond his control. "You can't just abandon ship! We built this together! Vance is coming by this afternoon to audit the accounts, and without your signature on the restructuring forms, the entire deal falls apart!"
"Then let it fall apart," Elena said coldly, looking past him at the empty display cases where the diamond rings still sat untouched on the glass surface. "You wanted a high-society merger, Julian. Enjoy dealing with your new partners without the person who actually knew how to balance the ledger."
