Chapter 4 - The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Clara stared at the cream-colored legal pages spilling out of the glove box like a cascading waterfall of betrayal.

At the very top of the stack, gleaming under the harsh overhead console light, was her full legal signature, meticulously rendered in blue ink down to the looping flourish on the final letter.

Except she had never held that pen, never visited that notary public, and certainly never authorized the transfer of her family's entire life savings into an offshore account bearing Marcus's corporate letterhead.

"This is a forgery," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she looked up from the documents to meet Marcus's unblinking gaze. "I never signed this. Where did you get this?"

"Your husband handed it to me himself, signed, sealed, and delivered, less than an hour ago," Marcus replied, leaning back in his seat with an unsettling air of corporate calm. "He said you were getting suspicious, that you had a habit of looking into things you shouldn't. He offered you as collateral to clear his own corporate debt."

Outside the vehicle, Leo hammered his fist against the rear quarter panel again, shouting unintelligible warnings that were drowned out by the sudden, deafening wail of the SUV’s security alarm.

Clara frantically pulled on the interior door handle, but Marcus had dead-bolted the mechanical override, trapping her inside the hot cabin with the stranger who held her financial ruin in his lap.

"Let me out of this car right now," Clara demanded, her restraint finally shattering as she hammered her open palm against the shatterproof glass.

"I can't do that, Clara," Marcus said softly, reaching down to the floorboard and pulling out a heavy, industrial zip-tie from beneath the seat. "Because the moment you opened that door three minutes ago, you stepped into a federal investigation that your husband spent three years orchestrating."

Clara froze, the plastic zip-tie clicking ominously as Marcus began to pull the loop tight between his fingers.

"What investigation?" she asked, her breath catching in her throat.

May you like

Marcus didn't answer immediately; instead, he pointed his chin toward the parking lot entrance, where two unmarked federal cruisers were just beginning to block off the exit lanes with sirens spinning silently.
