Chapter 10 - The Power Outage

The sudden plunge into crimson emergency lighting cast long, demonic shadows across the concrete walls of the holding facility.
Leo drew his service weapon with a sharp click, his eyes darting toward the open doorway as heavy boots thudded down the hallway in a panicked stampede.
"Stay behind me," Leo ordered, stepping in front of Clara and pushing her back against the far wall of the cell.
"What's happening?" Clara shouted over the wailing alarm, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Is it an attack?"
"The local power grid didn't fail," Leo said, his jaw tight as he stared out into the smoky corridor. "Someone overrode the substation firewall from inside the building."
Before Clara could process the warning, a figure in a dark tactical uniform appeared in the doorway, moving with terrifying speed and precision.
Before Leo could raise his weapon, the intruder fired a compressed nitrogen dart straight into Leo's shoulder, dropping the young federal agent to the floor with a soft, boneless thud.
"Leo!" Clara screamed, lunging forward, but a gloved hand caught her by the shoulder and spun her around against the cold concrete wall.
The intruder lowered his night-vision goggles, revealing a rugged, familiar face that Clara hadn't seen in three years—her brother, Thomas, who was supposed to be serving a federal prison sentence in Oregon.
"Thomas?" Clara gasped, struggling to catch her breath as her brother pressed a finger to his lips.
"Shut up and listen to me, Clara," Thomas whispered urgently, glancing back down the dark hallway to ensure the coast was clear. "If you stay in this building another five minutes, you're going to end up taking the fall for a murder that hasn't even happened yet."
"What are you talking about?" Clara demanded, trying to pull away from his grip. "David is gone, Marcus is tied up in federal custody, and—"
"Marcus isn't in custody," Thomas interrupted, his eyes wide with genuine panic. "The man they arrested in that parking lot wasn't Marcus Thorne. It was a decoy hired to take the heat while the real Thorne cleans out your family's safety deposit box."
Clara stared at her brother in sheer disbelief, the labyrinth of deception collapsing in on her from every possible direction.
"If that wasn't Marcus," Clara whispered, the blood draining completely from her face, "then who was the man sitting in that car?"

Thomas didn't answer with words; instead, he reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a small, blood-stained silver key, and pressed it firmly into Clara's trembling palm.
