Chapter 1 - The Wrong Passenger Seat

The harsh afternoon sunlight bounced off the asphalt of the crowded suburban shopping center, but Clara felt a sudden, chilling draft down her spine.

She stood frozen on the pavement, clutching her smartphone with trembling fingers, her mind desperately trying to process what had just happened inside the black SUV.

The man in the driver’s seat—wearing a light green polo shirt and beige pants—was still staring at her through the slightly lowered passenger window, his expression a mix of bewilderment and caution.

Through the tinted glass, Clara could clearly see the man in the grey t-shirt standing outside in the parking lot, watching the entire bizarre exchange with wide, unblinking eyes.

"What do you mean, you're good?" the driver asked, his voice sharp and laced with an unmistakable edge of defensive hostility.

"I mean exactly what I said," Clara snapped back, her cheeks burning hot as the adrenaline began to surge through her veins, overriding her embarrassment. "You heard me the first time, so stop acting like I spoke a foreign language."

"Listen to me, lady, you just walked right into my vehicle without knocking, and now you’ve got an attitude?" the man retorted, leaning his elbow on the center console while gripping the steering wheel tightly. "Who gave you the right to just open my door and treat my car like a taxi?"

"Your car?" Clara’s voice rose, her patience snapping under the immense weight of a day that had already gone completely wrong from the very first hour. "Look around you! There are fifty identical black SUVs in this exact lot, and your parking job is so atrocious you’re practically taking up two spaces!"

"My parking job is fine," the man growled, his jaw clenching as he glared at her. "You’re the one trespassing, staring blindly at that glowing screen of yours like a zombie."

"Don't you dare talk to me about zombies," Clara fired back, pointing her phone at him accusingly. "You're sitting in the exact same make, model, and year as my husband’s car, right down to the ridiculous keychain hanging from the ignition!"

"I don't know anything about your husband," the driver said coldly, his eyes narrowing. "And if you don't back away from my door right now, I'm calling security."

Clara took a sharp step back, ready to hurl a final insult, when the screen of her phone suddenly lit up with a video call notification, displaying her husband’s face—and behind him, the exact same interior of a black SUV.
