Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the grand dining room cast a warm, deceptive glow over the candlelit tables, but the atmosphere inside was brittle as frozen glass. Koralie stood motionless near the pristine white tablecloth, her fingers lightly pressing against a small folded place card. The bold, elegant cursive spelling out "Bride" seemed to mock the emptiness surrounding it. Just feet away, her father, Richard, shifted his weight from one polished shoe to the other, his navy blue suit suddenly feeling too tight across his chest. He cleared his throat, a nervous tic distorting the corners of his mouth.

"I just rearranged a few things," Richard murmured, his voice cracking slightly under the silent pressure of the room.

Beside him stood Eleanor, his new wife, draped in an elaborate gold cape gown that shimmered under the chandeliers. Eleanor’s dark hair was pinned up with mathematical precision, but her posture was rigid, her jaw clenched as she stared at Koralie with a mixture of apprehension and calculated defiance. Further back, near the arched entryway, Chloe—Eleanor’s thirty-year-old daughter—clutched her shimmering gold clutch like a shield, her blond hair catching the amber light while her eyes darted anxiously between Richard and Koralie.

Koralie looked down at the white card in her hand, feeling the stark contrast between the heavy cardstock and the fragile reality of her family. Her dark waves fell over her shoulders, framing an expression that had shifted from initial confusion to a cold, unyielding resolve. She did not raise her voice. There was no need for theatrics, no screaming, and no sudden outbursts. Her power lay in the absolute stillness of her gaze.

"Where is my mother's card, dad?" Koralie asked softly, the quiet cadence cutting through the ambient hum of the estate's ventilation system like a razor.

Richard swallowed hard, his dark eyes refusing to meet hers. "The seating chart was getting complicated, honey. We had to accommodate... well, certain logistical preferences."

Koralie stared intensely, her eyes narrowing as the dark implications of his sanitized explanation settled over her. She knew the truth. This wasn't about logistics; it was about erasure. Her mother, who had built the very foundation of the estate Richard now shared with Eleanor, was being systematically excised from the family’s public history, starting with a single seat at a family dinner celebrating Koralie's own wedding eve.

"And Miss Lee, please, it's just a matter of time before she leaves," Koralie said, turning her piercing gaze toward Eleanor. "Or the bride does. Choose."

The ultimatum hung in the air, heavy and undeniable. Richard looked between his daughter and his new wife, realizing that the quiet girl he thought he could easily manage had grown into a woman who would tear his carefully constructed world down to the studs.
