Chapter 7

The rain tapped rhythmically against the glass of Elena’s apartment window, a small, modest space overlooking the amber glow of the city streetlights. On the small kitchen counter, a steaming mug of chamomile tea sat next to an open notebook filled with architectural sketches. Her mother, Maria, sat in the armchair by the heater, wrapped in a knitted wool shawl, her breathing steady and clear for the first time in months.

"The hospital called today, Elena," Maria said softly, her accented voice carrying a mixture of relief and deep concern. "They said the balance was paid in full by a private trust. Is this connected to the restaurant job? The one you refuse to talk about?"

Elena walked over and knelt beside her mother’s chair, resting her hands on Maria’s knees, just as Mr. Val had knelt beside her days ago. "It’s complicated, Mama. The men who... the men who hurt me at work that night, they belonged to a world we usually only read about in financial newspapers. But the man who helped me—Alexander Val—he’s different. He’s powerful, but he uses his power to balance scales that others broke."

Maria reached out, her frail fingers gently touching Elena’s new pixie cut. "Power is a dangerous thing, my child. Men like that do not give help without expecting a piece of your soul in return. Make sure you know what currency he is asking for."

Elena looked into her mother’s tired, knowing eyes. She knew Maria was right; nothing in this city was truly free. Alexander Val had rescued her from humiliation, secured her professional future, and erased her family's crushing medical debt. But as she thought about the intense, burning look in his eyes when he asked for her name, she realized the debt she owed him wasn't financial—it was personal.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. She walked over and picked it up. A single text message from an unknown number: “The past doesn't stay buried in alleyways, Elena. Meet me at the Grand Terminal at midnight.”

Her heart skipped a beat. It wasn't Val's number. It was Julian’s.

Stripped of his money, his status, and his corporate empire, Julian Vance had not disappeared into the night as Val had intended. Desperation is a powerful motivator, and a ruined man with nothing left to lose is far more dangerous than a wealthy executive with a reputation to protect.

Elena stared at the screen, the glowing light casting hard shadows across her face. She had two choices: ignore the message and let security handle whatever pathetic trap Julian had set, or go to the terminal and end this once and for all.
