Chapter 2

The silence in the grand dining room became absolute, save for the faint hum of the refrigeration units behind the bar. Julian forced a nervous, high-pitched chuckle, lowering his phone until it rested against his belt buckle. He puffed out his chest, attempting to cloak his sudden terror in the arrogant armor of old money and private club memberships.

"Mr. Val, good evening," Julian stammered, stepping forward while extending a hand that clearly trembled. "There’s a simple misunderstanding here. We were just having a bit of fun, corporate bonding, you know how these late nights get after a successful merger. The girl was merely participating in the joke. Right, Elena?"

Mr. Val did not stand up. He remained kneeling beside Elena on the cold tiles, his large frame shielding her from the predatory gaze of the men who had tormented her. He did not take Julian’s outstretched hand; he looked at it with quiet disgust, as though it were a diseased appendage.

"Did I ask you to speak, Julian?" Mr. Val’s voice was dangerously soft. He slowly rose to his full height, towering over Julian by several inches. The dark wool coat he wore seemed to absorb the restaurant's bright light, casting a long, heavy shadow over the men in tailored suits. "When I enter a room, I expect silence from those who have forgotten their manners. And when I see a woman humiliated in a place bearing my family's name, I demand answers."

Marcus stepped up beside Julian, trying to salvage their dwindling bravado. "Now hold on just a minute, Val. We are major investors in the downtown development project. You can't talk to us like we're street trash over a little workplace hazing. The girl is just seasonal staff. She'll get over it once we double her night's wages."

Elena finally found her voice, steady and cutting through the tense air like broken glass. "I am not seasonal staff, and my dignity is not for sale."

Mr. Val glanced down at Elena, a faint, approving flicker crossing his stern features before he turned his cold gaze back to the investors. He signaled slightly with two fingers, and his bodyguards immediately moved, stepping between the exit doors and the four executives, effectively trapping them inside the dining room.

"Julian Vance," Mr. Val said slowly, pronouncing every syllable as if reading from a death warrant. "Director of Vance Capital. You pride yourself on dismantling small businesses and taking over distressed properties through aggressive leverage. Isn't that correct?"

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. "That's business. Everyone knows how the game is played."

"Then let me introduce you to a new rule in the game," Mr. Val replied, pulling a sleek leather folio from his interior coat pocket. He flipped it open, revealing several embossed legal documents. "As of six minutes ago, my holding company acquired your primary mortgage debt, your corporate shares, and your personal residential trust. You no longer play the game, Julian. You are the asset."
