Chapter 1: The Weight of Ash

The pristine white amphitheater fell dead silent. A single tear tracked down Victor Vance’s cheek, cutting through the illusion of absolute power he had built over twenty years. He was the newly appointed titan of Vance Global, standing before three hundred of the world’s wealthiest investors, yet his trembling fingers clung to the charred notebook as if it were a bomb.

Across from him, nine-year-old Leo did not flinch. Beside Leo stood his little brother, Toby, clutching his fractured arm in a faded sling, staring at the glittering assembly with wide, unapologetic eyes.

"Get them out of here!" Beatrice’s voice cracked through the stillness like shattered glass. The chief financial director stepped forward, her tailored white suit radiating venom. "Victor, don't let street urchins sabotage the merger."

Victor raised one hand, and the security guards froze. His voice was barely a rasp. "Where did you get this?"

Leo took a slow, measured step forward. "My father died in the furnace room of the Genesis Tower twelve years ago. You told the police nobody was down there. You sealed the doors to contain the fire and save the executive vaults."

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery.

"He wrote down everything before the smoke took him," Leo continued, his voice piercing the polished marble hall. "He said you ran, Victor. But before he choked on the fumes, he pulled your unconscious body into the ventilation chute. He chose your life over his own."

Victor opened the notebook to the first page. The cursive strokes were erratic, smeared with soot, but unmistakably penned by Michael Hayes—his former head engineer and childhood friend.

*If Victor survives,* the ink read, *tell him the fire wasn't an accident. It was paid for.*

Victor looked up, his jaw clenched, the empire around him suddenly feeling like an open grave.
