Chapter 8 - The Inheritance of Debt

The flickering light of the cracked smartphone cast a harsh, ghostly glow across Marcus’s face as he stared at the screen inside the sealed archive aisle. The name staring back at him from the root directory file was undeniably that of his father, Richard Vance. According to the embedded transaction logs, the embezzlement scheme wasn't a recent aberration by Julian Brooks, nor a modern power play by Arthur Pendelton. It was a generational system of institutional theft designed to prop up failing real estate acquisitions during the market crash of the late nineties, funded entirely by skimming employee pension and welfare accounts.

"You’re trapped, Marcus," Agent Vance’s voice crackled through the small emergency intercom panel embedded beside the sealed steel shutter. "The facility lockdown is absolute. Federal cyber-security units have already mirrored our drives. Surrender the flash drive now."

Marcus clenched his fist around the small plastic drive, feeling its sharp edges bite into his leather-gloved palm. If he handed it over, the federal government would seize the entire history of Vance Enterprises, destroying the livelihood of three hundred innocent employees, ruining the reputation of his late father, and landing him in a federal penitentiary for crimes he didn't commit. If he kept it, he became an active fugitive hiding evidence from a federal warrant.

"Agent Vance," Marcus called back into the intercom, his voice dropping an octave into a low, controlled resonance. "The data you're looking for isn't on the corporate mainframes. It’s sitting right here in my hand. But if you open this shutter right now, you’ll trigger the failsafe protocol programmed into this drive."

Silence stretched across the intercom for three agonizing seconds, broken only by the rhythmic dripping of water from the soaked ceiling tiles.

"What kind of failsafe, Mr. Vance?" Agent Vance’s voice came back, sharper and more cautious than before.

"A dead-man’s switch," Marcus lied smoothly, his corporate negotiation training kicking in with surgical precision. "If my biometric signature isn't verified at the main terminal upstairs within ten minutes, an encrypted copy of these files goes out to every major media outlet and federal regulatory board in the country simultaneously. You’ll get a public scandal, not a quiet conviction."

A heavy metallic clank echoed from behind the steel shutter as Agent Cooper and Agent Vance conferred in hushed tones. Marcus used the delay to look closer at the drive’s directory tree. Buried beneath the financial ledgers was a hidden video file dated twelve hours ago, showing Julian Brooks sitting in the executive boardroom with Arthur Pendelton, calmly discussing how to frame Marcus for the exact discrepancy discovered on the sidewalk that very morning.

The heavy steel shutter suddenly groaned, grinding upward on its motorized tracks with a screech of protesting metal. Agent Vance stood on the other side, her hand resting near her service weapon, her eyes locked onto Marcus with pure, unadulterated suspicion.
