Chapter 13 - The Encrypted Call

The cracked smartphone on the marble kitchen island vibrated with a rhythmic, insistent hum, the screen flashing the white text of the incoming satellite call. Marcus remained rooted to the spot by the floor-to-ceiling window, the city lights reflecting off the wet glass behind him. Officer Miller stepped back from the island, gesturing toward the device with a restrained, professional nod, letting Marcus make the first move.

"Answer it, Mr. Vance," Miller said quietly. "That’s the call that decides whether you walk out of this penthouse as a cooperating witness or leave in federal handcuffs."

Marcus walked slowly across the hardwood floor, his polished leather shoes clicking softly in the quiet apartment. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the cracked screen, and swiped to accept the encrypted video feed. The display flickered, replacing the caller ID with a live, high-definition video stream from an unknown subterranean location that looked suspiciously like the building's server room.

Julian Brooks appeared on the small screen. He was no longer wearing the wrinkled gray suit and crooked tie from that morning. Instead, he wore a dark tactical turtleneck, his clean-shaven face illuminated by the blue glow of a half-dozen server racks humming in the background. He wasn't shaking anymore; his posture was rigid, confident, and entirely transformed.

"Good afternoon, Marcus," Julian said, his voice carrying through the penthouse speakers without a hint of its previous stutter. "I trust the federal house arrest is giving you plenty of time to review your family’s glorious corporate history."

Marcus stared at the screen, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line. "You played your part well today, Julian. The nervous clerk routine outside the revolving doors deserved an Academy Award."

Julian offered a thin, calculated smile. "It wasn't acting, Marcus. I genuinely hate public speaking. But taking down Arthur Pendelton and the legacy of Richard Vance required a little theatrical flair. You see, your father didn't just embezzle pension funds thirty years ago. He engineered the hostile takeover of my family’s manufacturing firm, driving my father to take his own life in this very building."

The revelation struck Marcus like a physical blow. He gripped the edge of the marble island with both hands, his knuckles turning white.

"This isn't about an audit or federal compliance," Marcus realized, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "This is a personal vendetta executed under the color of federal authority."

"It's both, Marcus," Julian replied sharply, his eyes narrowing on the screen. "Justice and vengeance happen to use the exact same paperwork. Right now, Arthur Pendelton is trying to board a private jet at Teterboro Airport using your father’s old corporate override codes. If you want to clear your family’s name and save what’s left of this company, you have exactly twenty minutes to meet me in the server room on sub-level four. Bring your biometric key."

The video feed cut to black instantly, leaving Marcus staring at his own exhausted reflection in the cracked glass of the phone.
