Chapter 1 - The Cold Sidewalk

Marcus Vance adjusted the lapels of his sharp navy blue suit, his fingers grazing the fabric with deliberate precision. He stared at the polished glass of the corporate headquarters reflecting the overcast morning sky. Beside him stood Officer Miller, a thirty-five-year-old Black police officer whose radio crackled with low-frequency static. A few feet away, Julian Brooks, a thirty-five-year-old Caucasian employee wearing a wrinkled gray suit and a crooked patterned tie, swallowed hard. Julian’s hands shook as he clutched a smartphone displaying a glowing spreadsheet. The air between them felt brittle, chilled by the autumn wind rolling off the concrete.
"Bring me his contract and the last six months of payroll history," Marcus said, his voice deep, controlled, and entirely devoid of warmth.
Julian’s eyes darted toward Officer Miller before snapping back to Marcus.
"Sir, I don't think that's necessary," Julian stammered, his voice cracking slightly on the final syllable. He wiped his sweaty palms against his trousers, desperately trying to keep the phone steady. "It’s just a minor administrative glitch. A simple software reconciliation error that my team and I were going to fix by end of business today."
Marcus didn't blink. He maintained unbroken eye contact, his trimmed gray beard catching the pale morning light.
"Every month you recorded three thousand, but paid him two thousand," Marcus said, stepping closer until the space between them vanished. "Six months. You stole six thousand dollars from him."
Julian opened his mouth to formulate another excuse, but the words caught in his throat like dry ash. He looked down at the screen, trapped by the unyielding numbers staring back at him.
"You're fired. And he gets every dollar you stole," Marcus declared, turning his broad shoulders toward the waiting police officer.

Officer Miller stepped forward, resting a heavy hand near the handcuffs on his utility belt. Julian stumbled backward, his heel catching the edge of the revolving door mat, sending his phone clattering onto the concrete sidewalk with a sharp metallic crack.
