Chapter 7

The sound of Beatrice’s heels clicking frantically against the marble floor shattered the momentary hesitation of the federal agents. With a desperate grace that belied her panic, she dove toward the base of the gold-framed mirror where the small encrypted flash drive lay half-hidden in the reflection of the crystal chandeliers.

“Stop her!” Julian yelled, straining against the heavy steel handcuffs the marshals had just snapped around his wrists.

The lead marshal reacted instantly, lunging forward and tackling Beatrice just inches from her target. She hit the floor with a sharp cry, her elegant red gown tearing at the shoulder as the flash drive skittered further away, sliding directly across the threshold into the darkened parlor through the open double doors.

Elena screamed, covering her face as the chaos escalated far beyond anything she had ever imagined in her sheltered, upper-class existence. Clara wrenched herself free from the startled agent holding her arms, ignoring the burning ache in her shoulders, and bolted after the sliding piece of metal.

“Clara, don't!” Julian shouted, his knees hitting the marble floor as the marshals forced him down.

Clara ignored him. Her bare hands slid across the cold marble as she dove into the darkened parlor, her fingers stretching out into the gloom. Her fingertips brushed against the smooth plastic casing of the drive just as a heavy leather boot slammed down onto the floor inches from her hand.

She looked up slowly. Standing in the doorway of the parlor was a man she had never seen before—a tall, heavily built individual wearing a plain dark trench coat, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at the floor, blocking any exit from the room.

“Game's over, Mr. Vance,” the stranger said, his voice deep and entirely devoid of emotion, looking past Clara toward Julian in the hallway.

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as he recognized the man in the trench coat. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking older, broken, and utterly defeated.

“Vance,” the stranger repeated, stepping into the dim light of the parlor, “you thought you could bury twenty years of maritime smuggling under a domestic maid's apron and a charity foundation?”

Clara slowly closed her fist around the flash drive, hiding it in the palm of her hand against the carpet. She looked up at the armed stranger, then back at Julian, who was struggling against the federal marshals in the hallway.

“Who is he?” Clara demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the parlor. “Tell me who he is!”

Julian slumped forward against the polished floor, the handcuffs clinking loudly. “He is the man,” Julian whispered hoarsely, “who covered up your mother's murder.”

The stranger in the trench coat smiled coldly, raising the silenced pistol toward Clara’s head.
