Chapter 12

The deafening crack of the gunshot echoed violently off the marble floors and vaulted ceilings of the grand hallway, plunging everyone into instant, paralyzed silence. The emergency generator's failure left the mansion illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow of the security monitor across the room and the pulsing red LED of the flash drive still clutched in Clara's hand.

“Get down!” the lead marshal shouted, pushing Julian and Elena toward the base of the grand staircase while drawing his weapon and aiming it toward the dark mouth of the service corridor.

Clara dropped to one knee against the cold marble, her fingers tightening around the water-damaged confession papers and the flash drive. The smell of cordite drifted heavily through the air, mixing with the scent of polished wood and expensive perfume.

“Beatrice!” Julian yelled, straining against the federal agents holding him down. “Beatrice, where are you?”

There was no answer from the service corridor, only the sound of slow, heavy footsteps dragging across the linoleum floor, accompanied by the wet, rhythmic drip of a fresh leak somewhere in the plumbing overhead.

Elena pressed herself flat against the wall beside the staircase, trembling uncontrollably, her breath coming in ragged gasps. “Who shot? Who's back there?” she whispered into the darkness, her voice breaking with raw terror.

The lead marshal signaled two of his officers to move forward, their tactical flashlights cutting sharp, blinding beams of white light through the shadows of the East Wing corridor. The beams swept across the wallpaper, illuminating the ornate wainscoting and the trail of dark, viscous fluid pooling near the doorway of the pantry.

Clara stood up slowly, ignoring the orders of the marshals to stay down. She followed the beam of the flashlight with her eyes, stepping past the shattered frame of the gold mirror.

Lying crumpled on the floor near the pantry entrance was Beatrice, her elegant off-the-shoulder red gown soaked in blood spreading rapidly from a wound in her chest. Her manicured fingers were still clutching the cell phone she had used to call her legal counsel just minutes earlier.

Julian broke free from the restraining hands of the agent for a fraction of a second, stumbling forward into the light of the flashlight. He fell to his knees beside Beatrice, pulling her head into his lap, ignoring the blood staining his expensive black suit jacket.

“Beatrice... look at me. Stay with me,” Julian begged, his voice cracking with a terrifying vulnerability that strip-mined away his remaining layers of arrogance.

Beatrice's eyes fluttered open, her breathing shallow and rattling. She looked up at Julian, a weak, cynical smile touching her pale lips.

“You... you always loved your secrets more than anything else, Julian,” Beatrice whispered, coughing up a small bubble of crimson. “Now... the house is burning down, and there's no mirror left to hide behind.”

Her eyes rolled back, and her head went completely limp against Julian's arm. The silence that followed was absolute, heavier than any lie they had built over the past twenty years.

Clara stood over them, holding her mother's water-damaged confession in one hand and the flash drive in the other. She looked down at the woman who had helped orchestrate her lifelong exile, feeling no anger—only a hollow, chilling emptiness.

Before the marshals could pull Julian away from Beatrice's body, the security monitor near the ceiling sparked violently, the screen flickering back to life to display a live feed from the mansion's front security gates.

Parked outside the iron gates was an unmarked black sedan, its high beams blinding the camera—and stepping out of the passenger side was a man carrying a heavy leather briefcase, wearing a tailored suit identical to Julian's, holding a federal arrest warrant bearing a signature dated today.
