Chapter 5

The red LED light on the small flash drive blinked rhythmically against Julian’s palm, casting a tiny, baleful pulse across the polished marble floor. Outside, the sound of heavy boots mounting the stone steps grew louder, accompanied by the sharp, metallic clink of official brass badges and radio static. The grand hallway, usually a temple of wealth and pristine order, felt like a holding cell awaiting an impending execution.
Clara stared at the drive resting in her father's hand. Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps, her fingers clutching the blue cotton of her maid's apron. She knew that taking the drive meant accepting his terms, entering a dangerous game of institutional survival, and stepping entirely out of the shadows into a world of corporate warfare she was ill-equipped to fight.
“Why are you giving this to me?” Clara asked, her voice shaking as she looked from the flash drive up into Julian’s hardened, panic-stricken eyes. “If the auditors find this, your entire empire collapses. Everything you built to keep us apart burns to the ground.”
“Because,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper, “they already have my financial records. But they don't have the personal file. The one your mother left in the safety deposit box in Zurich. This drive is the key to it. If the state takes it, they bury the truth forever.”
Elena stepped between them, her face pale, her eyes wide with betrayal. She looked at her father as if seeing a complete stranger wearing a familiar suit.
“You're handing over company secrets to a stranger?” Elena demanded, her voice cracking with indignation and grief. “I am your daughter! I earned my place in this house, I worked for the foundation, and you're handing our legacy to the maid?”
“She is your sister, Elena!” Julian snapped back, the anger flaring briefly before collapsing into exhaustion. “Stop acting like this is about a job title. This is about what your grandfather started and what I tried to finish by hiding the truth.”
Clara slowly reached out. Her fingertips brushed against Julian’s cold skin as she took the flash drive from his hand. The metal was freezing, a stark contrast to the stifling heat of the hallway. She tucked the drive into the small hidden pocket of her maid's uniform, her eyes never leaving Julian’s face.
“If my mother's death wasn't an accident,” Clara whispered, her voice hardening with sudden, terrifying clarity, “this drive better prove who pulled the trigger.”
Julian’s face went completely bloodless. Before he could speak, the massive white double doors of the hallway exploded inward, splintering wood echoing through the mansion as three federal marshals in tactical gear stepped across the threshold, weapons drawn.
“Julian Vance!” the lead marshal shouted, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. “Step away from the table. You are under arrest for corporate conspiracy and obstruction of justice.”
As the marshals rushed forward, the lead agent's eyes darted to Clara in her maid uniform, and he immediately raised his weapon toward her, mistaking her for an accomplice.
