Chapter 8 - The Sealed Basement

The sudden silence in the hallway was deafening. Clara pulled both girls against her chest, her breathing ragged as she stared at the solid oak door. The deadbolt was locked again, flush and immovable.
"We're going down to the basement," Clara said, her voice dropping into a flat, dangerous register. "Right now. We are going to find whatever started this, and we are ending it."
Maya looked up, her freckled face pale with shock. "Mom, no. The letter said the basement is where the core is. If you break the seal down there, the whole house collapses inward."
"I don't care about the house, Maya," Clara snapped, her maternal fury overriding every ounce of fear. "It took the shape of your father. It's playing sick games with Lily. We are finishing this."
She led them back through the kitchen, stepping carefully around the spot where the metallic root had withdrawn, leaving behind a jagged, smoking scar in the floorboards. At the far corner of the kitchen, half-hidden behind the pantry door, lay a narrow wooden panel in the floor that Clara had assumed was a crawlspace access hatch. She had never opened it before, believing it to be sealed shut by decades of paint.
With a fierce tug, Clara gripped the iron ring set into the wood. To her surprise, the hatch lifted effortlessly, sliding open with a smooth, oiled glide that felt entirely unnatural. A wave of damp, freezing air surged upward, carrying the overwhelming scent of wet earth, iron, and ancient sap.
A steep wooden staircase led down into absolute darkness. Clara reached for the light switch on the wall, flipping it up and down, but the overhead bulb remained dead.
Maya reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone, pressing the screen to activate the flashlight beam. A harsh, bright cone of light cut through the gloom, illuminating the narrow stairs leading down into the subterranean dark.
"I'll hold the light," Maya whispered, stepping up beside Clara. "But I'm not going down the last three steps. That's where the floor changes."

Clara nodded grimly. She scooped Lily up once more, holding the toddler securely against her hip, and placed her first bare foot onto the top step of the basement stairs. As her heel touched the wood, a low, resonant hum vibrated through the foundation, and the heavy kitchen door behind them locked itself with three distinct, echoing thuds.
