Chapter 11 - The Anchors Sink

The ground beneath Clara’s feet buckled violently, a sharp tremor rippling through the damp soil as the iron spikes drove themselves completely out of sight into the earth. The massive black timber stump in the center of the room split down the middle with a sound like cracking ice, revealing a hollow core packed with dense, pulsing bundles of fibrous roots that glowed with a faint, amber light.
"Lily! Get away from there!" Clara screamed, lunging forward and sweeping the toddler up into her arms just as the floorboards above their heads groaned under an immense, unnatural weight.
Maya tumbled down the remaining steps from the landing, losing her footing on the steep wooden boards and sliding onto the dirt floor. Clara dropped to one knee, shielding both girls with her body as dust and wood splinters rained down from the ceiling joists.
"The foundation is shifting!" Maya cried out, covering her head as a large chunk of plaster detached from the basement ceiling and crashed onto the dirt a few feet away. "Mom, the key! Lily touched the key! You have to make her drop it!"
Clara looked down at Lily’s hand. The toddler was clutching the ornate iron key tightly against her chest, her red hair clinging to her damp forehead, her blue eyes wide and serene. She wasn't crying. She looked almost triumphant.
"It's mine now," Lily whispered, tilting her head at an unnatural angle as she stared up at Clara. "The house gave it to me."
A sudden, freezing draft swept through the subterranean chamber, carrying with it the sound of dozens of voices whispering in unison—a chaotic chorus of overlapping tones that sounded like men shouting over the roar of a rushing river. The walls of the basement began to contract, the massive tree trunks bowing inward as if the entire structure above them was collapsing into the cellar hole.
Clara gripped Lily’s small wrist, trying gently to pry her fingers open, but the toddler's grip was impossibly strong, her small hand locked around the iron key like a vise.
"Maya, help me!" Clara shouted over the rising din of the contracting walls.
May you like
Maya scrambled across the dirt, reaching out to grab the key, but the moment her fingertips brushed the cold metal, a blinding flash of white light erupted from the center of the stump, throwing both girls backward against the damp wooden wall.
