Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Circle

The morning sunlight sliced across the polished oak kitchen floor of the suburban tract home, illuminating every speck of dust dancing in the air. Maya sat frozen at the kitchen island, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her two-year-old sister, Lily, with her unruly halo of short red hair and mud-stained beige pants, was pointing a small, trembling finger directly at the upper pantry. Tears tracked down the toddler's flushed cheeks as she sobbed with an intensity that felt entirely disproportionate to a dropped kitchen item.
"She did it! He did it!" Lily wailed, her voice cracking with an uncharacteristic venom that made the hairs on Maya’s arms stand at attention.
Maya whipped her head toward the hallway, opening her mouth to call for their mother, before the terrifying, crushing weight of memory hit her like a physical blow. There was no mother coming down the stairs. There was only the empty hallway, the closed front door, and the faint, dark scratch slowly beginning to carve itself into the wood beneath her sneakers.
Lily stopped crying instantly. The absolute silence that followed was broken only by the toddler's deadpan, chilling whisper as she stared blankly at the empty dark recess of the open upper cabinet.

"Bad cabinet," Lily declared softly.
Maya stared at the white plastic cups scattered across the floor, then slowly looked down at her own hands, where the faint outline of a silver key was slowly pressing itself into her palm. Before she could scream, the heavy wooden door of the upper kitchen cabinet swung open entirely by its own volition, revealing a deep, velvety blackness inside that was beginning to breathe.
