Chapter 2

The harsh command lingered in the air, leaving Clara paralyzed on the cold marble floor. Her yellow cleaning gloves felt heavy and restrictive, a stark reminder of her station in this sprawling mansion. Victor did not move from his spot near the double doors, his imposing frame blocking any easy exit. His tattoos, swirling dragons and sharp geometric lines climbing up his thick neck, seemed to pulse with his rapid breathing. He refused to look at Eleanor, focusing his intense gaze entirely on the young girl who dared accuse his wife.
Eleanor shifted slightly, her dark red dress rustling against the polished floor. She adjusted her grip on the infant, whose cries had subsided into exhausted, ragged hiccups. Ethan’s small yellow outfit was damp with sweat, mirroring the nervous moisture beading on Eleanor’s forehead. She knew Victor’s temper; she knew the violent history he had worked so hard to bury beneath tailored suits and high-end real estate ventures. If Victor believed Clara’s accusation, the consequences would be catastrophic for everyone involved.
“Victor, listen to me,” Eleanor pleaded again, her voice shaking with a fragile desperation that felt entirely foreign to her normally composed demeanor. “Clara is confused. The baby was slipping. It was an accident.”
Clara shook her head violently, her tear-stained face twisting in disbelief. “It wasn’t an accident!” she shouted, forgetting for a brief second her fear of the towering man standing before her. “I saw her twist his wrist. She wanted him to cry. She wanted to hurt him to get back at you, Mr. Sterling!”
Victor took a slow, deliberate step forward. The sound of his leather-soled shoes clicking against the marble sent a tremor through the room. He did not yell, which was always the most terrifying thing about him. When Victor was angry, he went deathly quiet. He crouched down slightly to meet Clara’s eye level, the gold watch gleaming as he rested his heavy hand on his knee.

“You accuse my wife of harming my son,” Victor said, his voice a dangerous whisper. “You better be entirely certain of what you saw, girl, because if you are lying to cover your own negligence, you will not survive the hour in this house.”
Clara swallowed hard, the weight of the threat pressing down on her chest. She glanced at Eleanor, whose eyes met hers with a silent, pleading warning. A dangerous web of secrets was unraveling, and Clara realized she had just stepped into the center of a storm she might not survive.
