Chapter 5: The Empty Mansion

The limousine glided through the wrought-iron gates of an expansive estate tucked away in a quiet, affluent neighborhood of the city. Towering oak trees lined the winding private driveway, their bare branches silhouetted against a starless night sky. At the end of the drive stood a grand, imposing stone manor. It was a masterpiece of classic architecture, yet from the outside, it possessed a chilling, uninhabited quality. There were no warm lights glowing from the upper windows, no signs of life beyond the security lamps illuminating the perimeter.
When the car came to a smooth halt, Arthur hurried to open the door. Julian stepped out first, then turned to offer his hand to Lily. She hopped down onto the cobblestone courtyard, her small shoes clicking softly against the stone as she looked up in awe at the massive double doors of the house.
“Is this your castle?” Lily asked softly, her eyes wide as she clutched Mr. Snuggles against her chest.
“Something like that,” Julian said with a trace of bitterness in his tone that he quickly masked. “Though a castle is usually filled with people. This one is mostly just empty space.”
As they stepped inside the grand foyer, the vastness of the estate swallowed up their presence. High vaulted ceilings, sweeping dual staircases of polished mahogany, and marble floors echoed the quiet footsteps of the two occupants. A housekeeper named Mrs. Higgins, an older woman with kind eyes and a sensible grey bun, emerged from the hallway, stopping dead in her tracks when she saw them. Her hands flew to her mouth in utter astonishment.
“Mr. Vance! Good heavens, I wasn’t expecting guests... especially not one so young,” Mrs. Higgins stammered, her gaze shifting rapidly between Julian and the little girl in the lace dress.
“Mrs. Higgins, this is Lily. She is going to be spending the day with me,” Julian explained, his voice leaving no room for argument or confusion. “Please prepare the guest suite on the second floor, and have the kitchen warm up some hot cocoa and pastries. Whatever we have that is comforting.”

“Right away, sir,” Mrs. Higgins replied, recovering her composure with professional grace. She knelt down gently to Lily's level, offering a warm, reassuring smile. “Welcome to the house, Lily. I am Mrs. Higgins. If you need anything at all, you just let me know.”
Lily nodded shyly, hiding slightly behind Julian’s trouser leg. Julian felt a strange, unfamiliar warmth spread through his chest—a sensation of domesticity he had deliberately purged from his life long ago.
