Chapter 10: The Threshold of Discovery

The revelation hit Julian like a physical blow. Clara Hayes had reported Lily missing. To the authorities and to her aunt, Lily was a runaway who had wandered into a high-society gala and latched onto a billionaire stranger. The fragile, magical bubble they had built over the last fourteen hours was about to collide violently with the rigid machinery of the law.
“Where is Clara Hayes now?” Julian asked, his voice dropping into a cold, commanding register that brooked no hesitation.
“She’s at the downtown precinct, Julian. The police are questioning her, and social services are preparing to place Lily in temporary foster care pending an investigation into household stability,” Marcus said grimly. “You can’t just keep her there, no matter what happened last night. You need to bring her in.”
Julian looked back at Lily. She looked up from her drawing, catching his eye, and offered a small, trusting smile before returning to her crayons. The thought of sending her into the cold, bureaucratic labyrinth of the foster system—to be shuffled from temporary shelter to shelter just like he had read about in corporate reports—made his blood run cold.
“Cancel my meetings for the rest of the week, Marcus,” Julian said, his voice hard as steel. “Prepare the legal team. We are going down to the precinct.”
“Julian, be careful,” Marcus warned. “You’re walking into a legal firestorm. If you interfere with child services without proper standing, it could destroy everything you’ve built.”
“Let it burn,” Julian snapped, ending the call before Marcus could reply.
He stood up from the mahogany desk and walked slowly across the Persian rug, kneeling down beside Lily. She held up her new drawing—a neat, colorful picture of a big house with two stick figures standing side by side beneath a radiant sun.
“Look, Julian. I drew us in front of your castle,” she said proudly.
Julian felt a sharp lump form in his throat. He took the drawing from her small hands, his fingers trembling slightly. He knew that the illusion of being her daddy ""just for one day"" was coming to an end, but looking into her trusting hazel eyes, he realized something profound: he didn't want the day to end. He didn't ever want to let go.
“Lily,” Julian said softly, cupping her small cheek with his palm. “We need to go for a ride in the car. We’re going to go see your Aunt Clara.”

Lily’s smile faltered slightly, her hazel eyes clouding with sudden apprehension. “Is she mad at me?”
“No,” Julian promised, his voice steady and fiercely protective. “Nobody is mad at you. I’m going to make sure of that.”
