Chapter 14: The Red Heart Returned

Julian took the folded paper with both hands, treating it with more reverence than any corporate contract he had ever signed. He unfolded it slowly. Inside was another drawing—this time, it showed two stick figures standing side by side under a bright sun, holding hands, with a large red heart glowing between them. Beneath the drawing, in wobbly, carefully practiced six-year-old letters, were the words: *To My Dad.*
A hot tear spilled over Julian’s lashes, tracing a path down his cheek, but this time, there was no pain in it—only an overwhelming sense of grace and redemption. He looked up into Lily’s hazel eyes, his voice breaking slightly as he spoke.
“Lily... you don’t have to call me your dad just for one day anymore,” Julian whispered, his heart swelling with a fierce, protective love that he had thought dead forever. “Unless... you want it to be for all the days after this one, too.”
Lily’s face lit up with a brilliant, radiant smile. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against the shoulder of his tailored jacket while Mr. Snuggles was squished tightly between them.
“I wanted it to be forever from the very first minute,” Lily whispered into his ear.
Julian wrapped his arms around her small frame, holding her close against the emptiness he had endured for so long. He had spent three years believing that love was a liability, something to be locked away behind iron gates to prevent further pain. But holding Lily, he realized that love was the only thing that made the journey worthwhile.
Minutes later, hand in hand, Julian and Lily walked out of the grand stone mansion and down the stone steps toward the waiting car. Arthur stood by the rear door, watching them with a wide, knowing grin, holding his cap respectfully against his chest.

“Where to, Mr. Vance?” Arthur asked smoothly as he opened the door.
“Home, Arthur,” Julian said, looking down at Lily with a genuine smile as she climbed into the plush leather interior. “Let’s go home.”
